French 1. Cycle 2 of Year Long Beginners French Class With Kim for Prisma.

In this Cycle we will build on the basic words and phrases students learned in Cycle 1. We work through a range of conversations that will enable you to communicate with sympathetic native French speakers and expand our vocabulary. I will introduce the passé composé and the immediate future tenses. The students will use and recognise these tenses in conversation and in writing.

Cycle 2.

Week 1: December 5th. Theme: Qu'est-ce que tu as fait pendant les vacances? What did you do during the break?
Model some simple French sentences, using the passé composé. Scaffold Je suis allé(e)/j'aui fait etc.
December and January holidays in France. How do French people celebrate Christmas and New Year?
Phrases for the holidays.
Days of the week, months of the year and seasons.
Counting. Review numbers 0-50. 
Homework: Research how French people celebrate Christmas and New Year. Tell us 2 facts you have found out in class next week.
Also make a Christmas or New Year card to show to the class next week.

Week 2. December 12th. Theme. December and January holidays.
Tell us the facts you learned.
Look at what French people eat at home for Christmas/New Year and what menus restaurants offer. Are there some foods and drinks that your family have? What foods and drinks are different?
Numbers 0-69
Homework: Write down what special meals you ate during the winter break, to tell us in class in January.


Week 3. January 9th 2024.
Bonne Année.
Tell the class about the special meals you ate during the holidays.
New Theme. Clothes, colours and shopping for clothes.
Show us the picture of your favourite clothes. Describe them to us.
Conversations on likes and dislikes of colours.
Conversations: Buying clothes in a French clothes shop. Things you say when you like and don’t like things/things are too big/small or too expensive!
Numbers: 0-100.
Homework: Write a conversation buying 2 items of clothing in a French shop. 
Extension task: You have difficulty finding just what you want for ONE item.

Week 4.  January 16th.
Present your clothes conversations to the class.
Theme: Subjects that we study. Introduce the names for different subjects. J’aime/je n’aime pas and other comments.
Which subjects do we study each day.
Compare our timetables to a French learner.
Homework: Fill in the ‘emploi du temps’. 
Learn the vocabulary for the different subjects and how to say we like them etc.


Week 5. January 23rd.
Discuss the ‘emploi du temps’ that you have filled in.
Theme: Introduction to the francophone world. Which countries around the world have French as the official language?
Learn the names of the continents and the French speaking countries.
Discussion about this Cycle's Project about a francophone country.
Things to include - a map and flag. What continent is it in? What is the country called in French and English? What other languages are spoken in the country.
Why is French one of the official languages? 
What is the country like - geographical info and what life is like for someone you age in that country. What food do they eat?
What is the country like - geographical info and what life is like for someone you age in that country. What route would you take if you wanted to visit this country?
Homework: Choose one French speaking country. Research how to say the country’s name in French, what the capital city is, why they speak French there, what the country is like (hot, cold, desert, large, small, mountains, an island, landlocked etc). 
One usual fact about the country.

Week 6. January 30th.
Present your francophone countries to the class.
Discuss which of these countries we would like to visit.
Numbers 0-100 and bigger numbers.
Homework: Revise numbers 0-100.
Work on your project.
Prepare some Q&A where you talk to a young person from your chosen Francophone country.


Week 7. February 6th.
Conversations, Q&A as your Francophone young person. 
Pair work - you and your partner are both young people from Francophone countries.
Some 1:1 time to discuss the progress on your projects.
Homework: Continue working on your project.
Write a short email from Francophone friend telling you about his/her family and where they live.


Week 8. February 13th.
Read out your emails from your Francophone friend.
En ville. What places will you see in a French town and in other Francophone Countries. 
What sort of housing will your person live in? Will they live in a city/town/village/countryside?
Numbers 0-100.
Homework: Continue with your Projects.
Find out what food and drinks are popular in your Francophone County and tell us in class next week.


Week 9. February 20th.
Students present their information about food in their Francophone country. Has anyone eaten the dishes students found out about?
Conversations in a café in various Francophone countries. 
Counting and number work 0-1000.
Homework: Complete your Project to present next lesson.


Week 10. February 27th.
Presentations of Projects.
We will play word an number games and talk about what we are going to do over Spring Break: Je vais…
Homework: Complete the simple French diary for what you did on 3 days during the break.
