Homework
1 hour per week. To show mastery, I recommend your child teaching you the new rule each week. Allow them to give you a quick spelling test! Make a few mistakes so they can explain the rule.
Assessment
Pre and Post-Assessments will be given in this course.

Class Experience

In this class, I will teach you 5 important spelling rules using manipulatives, Google slides, worksheets, and games. I use a multisensory approach to teaching (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic). Students will have plenty of opportunities to interact with one another.
 
***The first class will include a pre-assessment to determine if this course is right for your needs. ***THE STUDENT OR PARENT MUST BE ABLE TO SEND ME A PICTURE OF THE COMPLETED PRE-ASSESSMENT PAGE SOON AFTER IT IS COMPLETED ON DAY ONE.
A post-assessment will be given on the final day of class.***

Learning Goals

Students will be able to spell words based on the 5 spellings rules with at least 85% accuracy at the end of the course.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of a base word, suffix, and a derivative using hand gestures and spelling practice.

Supply List
Students will need a FOLDER WITH POCKETS, paper, pencil (no pens), 5 different colored highlighters or markers(optional), and printed manipulatives cut out and ready for class. Each week I will send you a downloadable file of material including Spelling Notebook and manipulatives.
**Students must be able to keep their practice pages organized in a folder, and the manipulatives should be ready to go BEFORE class begins.***

I have been a teacher in Texas for more than thirty years. My experience includes Dyslexia Intervention, Academic Coach, Reading/Language Arts Teacher, and Small Group Intervention. I have a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology.
I am passionate about teaching struggling readers. I use a multi-sensory approach to teaching Basic Language Skills, which includes: phonology, sound-symbol association, syllable instruction, morphology, syntax, and semantics.
