Homework
1 hour per week. The student should be reading each night for a minimum of 25 minutes. "Ear reading" with programs like Learning Ally, Bookshare, and Audible all count as reading. Your child will also benefit from hearing you model fluent reading. I will occasionally assign passages for oral reading as repeated practice. It is helpful if a family member can listen to the child read and provide feedback.Assessment

My teaching style is MULTISENSORY, DIAGNOSTIC, and PRESCRIPTIVE. I will quickly review the skills your child has mastered and target my instruction to your child's individual needs. I will teach using flashcards, Google Slides, worksheets, games, and decodable texts. Topics will include: 1) Phonemic and Phonological Awareness, 2) Six Syllable Types, 3) Syllable Division, 4) Spelling Rules and Common Orthographic Patterns, 5) Oral Reading Fluency Practice, 6) Vocabulary/Comprehension Strategies, 7) Multisensory Grammar/Writing WEEK 1: I will administer a decoding survey which will show specific areas of strengths and weaknesses. I will also administer an oral reading check to determine the reading level and the number of words the student reads per minute. Finally, a spelling check will be administered to determine areas of strengths and weaknesses. WEEK 2: WHAT IS A VOWEL? Vowel coding(breve), Phonology Practice, Spelling Practice WEEK 3: WHAT IS A CONSONANT? Phonology Practice, Spelling Practice, Clipped vs. Continuant Sounds WEEK 4: WHAT IS A SYLLABLE? Phonology Practice * The learner will progress at their own pace, based upon individual needs.
Learning Goals
1. Students will learn sound/symbol correspondence.
2. Students will be able to identify initial, medial, and final sounds in words.
3. Students will be able to count the number of syllables in words.
4. Students will be able to divide, code, and read multisyllabic words.
5. Students will spell words with increasing accuracy, with attention given to proper punctuation and capitalization in spelling dictation and quick-writes.
6. Students will increase their fluency rate and read with expression and comprehension.
7. Students will write complete sentences with correct capitalization and end punctuation.

Supply List
Please have the following supplies ready to go for each class: A three-ring binder, 5 dividers(or stickies) to mark sections, looseleaf paper or grade-level handwriting tablet, a pencil, an eraser, colored pencils, index cards, markers, and the ability to print a few weekly pages for lessons A whiteboard, wet-erase markers, and a few plastic sheet protectors are highly recommended. *****I will send a file upon enrollment. New files will be sent weekly.

I have been a teacher in Texas for more than thirty years. My experience includes Dyslexia Intervention, Academic Coach, Reading/Language Arts Teacher, and Small Group Intervention. I have a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology.
I am passionate about teaching struggling readers. I use a multi-sensory approach to teaching Basic Language Skills, which includes: phonology, sound-symbol association, syllable instruction, morphology, syntax, and semantics.
My interests include reading, travel, word games, puzzles, and rock collecting.
