Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
The word endocrine comes from the Greek words endon, meaning "inside" or "within." This organ system has multiple hormones and many functions that affect our body's daily functioning. We will see how some relate to each other as we explore this amazing system together!

Students will uncover and learn about the following areas in this short course:
Class I: Anatomy of the Endocrine System- Review of individual structures.

Class II: How does stress affect the endocrine system? This chemical message system has many amazing facts to discover. We will review how hormones help control mood, growth, and development, the way our organs work, and metabolism.

Class III: Our final class will be a review of how each organ comes together and how they affect each other. This will give students a chance to see the importance of the endocrine system. We will also have a wrap-up review game as well.

We will discover the structures through dynamic images and simulations into this fascinating system. There will be plenty of interaction and guided questions as we take our journey together. This active learning process helps students understand and remember the anatomy and major processes involved.

At the end of our final day, we will play a game and review what we've covered in all classes. This is so much fun! We will work together as a class as we wrap up with this review game.

**I will post a diagram for the students to bring to class and we will work on this together as we are learning. This will be posted in the classroom prior to our first meeting. Students may want to bring colored pencils, markers, or crayons to color our diagram.

**Students will also receive an optional homework assignment after each session which will be posted in the classroom.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Learning Goals
Students will gain confidence and learn new ideas about the endocrine system and how important it is for our body to function properly. We will not discuss in detail each hormone as there are too many complex concepts to learn. I want each student to gain an understanding of this system and how the various structures work together to help maintain homeostasis in the body.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We will not be discussing the reproductive hormones of the body as this would encompass the reproductive system components. This class stresses the endocrine system and how the body maintains homeostasis with the many different organs involved. Parents may choose to discuss the reproductive organs with their child and relate this to the endocrine system as well.
Supply List
Students will have a handout placed in the classroom to print out and may want to bring colored pencils with them to class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

As a Registered Nurse who specialized in Cardiology for over 10 years, I've always been fascinated by the heart, respiratory, skeletal, integumentary, endocrine, and nervous systems. This class gives me the opportunity to teach children about this specific system and its significance in the body. I traveled many years in the field of Cardiac Consulting to assist with the implementation of Cardiac Surgery centers throughout the country. Bringing this learning opportunity to children is a passion of mine. Young learners are like a sponge and open to grasp complex anatomy when presented in this unique format. Watching each student learn about the human body and the amazing functions of the endocrine system is fascinating!
