5 in-class hoursHomework
2-4 hours per week. Please note: Students will need to practice a minimum of 2 hours every week to stay on top of class material. Sight-reading fluency is essential to learning class pieces. Weekly practice is essential to learn new material.Assessment
I will offer feedback after students perform an exercise and, if needed, provide suggestions to help the student master the concept. Mistakes are a part of learning a musical instrument! So students should not worry if they play the exercise or a piece correct on the first try. Together we will learn how to progress through new music and learn new musical concepts.Class Experience
Intermediate Level
Please note: This class picks up where Early Intermediate Piano Level P leaves off. Prospective students should be familiar with major and minor triads/scales and one-octave arpeggios. Sight reading music is essential to this class so prospective students should be comfortable with reading music in the Level 4 Piano Adventures series (material from Level P). In this class, students will explore expressiveness in music while exploring chord inversions, two octave scales & arpeggios dotted eighth to sixteenth notes and discovering the stylistic traits of Edvard Grieg and Scott Joplin. Please note: We will be using Piano Adventures Lesson Book Level 4 (2nd Edition) for this class. It is a required text for the class. Week One: We will start a piece with sixteenth note and dotted eighth note rhythms. Week Two: Continue to develop the piece from the previous class. F Major and D Harmonic Minor Scales and Chords. Week Three: Start a Mazurka in F Major. Week Four: Continue to develop Mazurka. Review chords in D minor. Week Five: Begin a new piece with an ostinato pattern. Week Six: Continue to develop the previous piece. Develop articulation (accents, sforzando, etc). Week Seven: Begin a French Minuet by Lully. G Major and E Harmonic Minor scales & chords. Week Eight: Review previously learned scales, chords and pieces.
