Class Experience

Learning to play the piano is a long term endeavor that I am thrilled to lead you on.
Each week we will approach new concepts and skills and learn songs that will allow you to slowly but surely gain all the knowledge and skills you need to be able to play whatever you want to.
Each week, our 30 minutes together will be spent basically in this way.
5ish minutes showing off what you practiced during the week. This is your chance to shine! If you struggled with anything with your songs during the week, tell me before you play them so we can work through it together.
15-20 minutes learning new concepts and skills. I have already planned what we will do and which goals we will work towards during this time.
The last 5 minutes is intended to be more of your choice. There will normally be a few options of what we can do during this time, but if we had to spend a lot of time back tracking and going over previous material, this is what we miss out on.

Lessons are when you get to learn new things and ask questions. Practice is what you do between lessons. When we go over new songs, the goal is that you understand what the page is telling you to do and know how to do that, not that you can play the song perfectly. During the week, your job is to practice it so that you can play it well at the start of the next lesson. My job is to give you the tools you need, your job is to practice using them.

Because the class is based on individual student progress, attendance is absolutely necessary. If the student cannot attend, please notify the teacher in advance and offer some suggestions for a make up lesson. If student is not in the classroom at class time, the teacher will wait 10 minutes. If student has still not arrived, class is cancelled for the week and will not be rescheduled. If the teacher is notified before class that student will not be there, teacher will try to reschedule lesson within the week.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to translate the music on the page to music from the piano.
Ultimately, they will be able to play whatever music they want to because they are skilled at reading notes and understanding lead sheets and chord charts.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Since this is a class for individual students, I schedule with families, so if you do not see a time that works for you, please ask! I will likely be able to set up a time that works for both of us :). Please make sure the tech is working before class and your learner is ready at start time.
Supply List
Student MUST HAVE a piano or keyboard. Parents will need to purchase lesson books from the Piano Adventures (Faber) Series ($7.50-$15 per quarter). Parents may also need to print sheet music from websites (generally free :)) Websites may be suggested for additional practice depending on the needs of the student. Also, bring pencil to your lesson.
Learners will need a laptop/computer (not phone or tablet) to have appropriate audio settings for lessons.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
