Homework
2-4 hours per week. Please note: Students will need to practice a minimum of 2 hours every week to stay on top of class material. Sight-reading fluency is essential to learning class pieces. Weekly practice is essential to learn new material.
Assessment
I will offer feedback after students perform an exercise and, if needed, provide suggestions to help the student master the concept. Mistakes are a part of learning a musical instrument! So students should not worry if they play the exercise or a piece correct on the first try. Together we will learn how to progress through new music and learn new musical concepts.

Class Experience

Please note: This class picks up where Early Intermediate Piano Level M leaves off. Prospective students should be familiar with 3/8 and 6/8 time signatures, the eighth note triplet rhythm, the chromatic scale, intervals of 7ths, one-octave arpeggios and the key of D major. Sight reading music is essential to this class so prospective students should be comfortable with reading music in the Level 3B Piano Adventures series (material from Level M). In this class, students will explore contrasts in music: sixteenth notes, minor scales, the 12-bar blues form, building agility and speed, playing with a "singing" tone and discovering the stylistic traits of Rebikov and Liszt.

Please note: We will be using Piano Adventures Lesson Book Level 3B (2nd Edition) for this class. It is a required text for the class.

Class One: Prior to Class 1, please review Humoresque. We will develop the chromatic scale ending (measures 23-the end). We will start Rebikov's The Bear and discuss tension in music.

Class Two: Review Humoresque and The Bear. Discover Major and Minor 3rds and triads.

Class Three: Check-in on piece from week two. Begin a piece using a variety of triads.

Class Four: Review Tropical Island. Begin a piece by Liszt in 6/4 time.

Class Five: Continue to develop the Liszt piece. Explore the 12 Bar Blues progression.

Class Six: Check-in on Liszt piece and begin a new blues piece featuring a walking bass pattern.

Class Seven: Review the blues piece. Work on tremolos. Start chord inversions.

Class Eight: Review chord inversions and start a short etude. Review pieces from previous classes.

Supply List
Please note: The class book will be Piano Adventures Lesson Book Level 3B (light purple cover/2nd edition). For advanced students, I also recommend getting Piano Adventures Performance Book Level 3B. I may assign additional pieces for advanced students from the performance book or if the student is ahead in class work. The links for both books are below.

Lesson Book 3B: https://pianoadventures.com/publications/piano-adventures-level-3b-lesson-book-2nd-edition/
Performance Book 3B: https://pianoadventures.com/publications/piano-adventures-level-3b-performance-book-2nd-edition/ ($7.99)

For students struggling with sight-reading (or would like extra review), I highly recommend the Level 3B Sight-reading book: https://pianoadventures.com/publications/piano-adventures-level-3b-sightreading-book/
