This four week course will introduce students to the planet Mars. We will cover its historic context, major features, geology, atmosphere, and past, present and future exploration. We will examine the questions such as, but not limited to: - Could there be or have been life on Mars? - How might hypothetical martian life differ from earth life? - What lessons have we learned from comparing Mars’ climate to Earth's? - Could humans visit the planet? Week One: - History - Context in solar system - Mars in the media Week Two: - Major features - Geology - Moons - Atmosphere Week Three: - Formation - Epochs - Internal Structure - Magnetic Fields Week Four: - Past and current missions - Human and robotic exploration - Terraforming - Future missions There are no prerequisites for this class, just a love of learning and curiosity about astronomy and outer space.
