In this four week course we will explore the ice dwarf planet Pluto. We will cover not only its bizarre geology, but also its historic and scientific importance in understanding our solar system. We will tackle questions such as: - What is a planet? - What are the similarities and differences between Earth and Pluto? - What can Pluto’s surface tell us about comet populations and the Kuiper Belt? - What is Pluto’s “giant heart” made of? - How did NASA’s New Horizons Mission challenge preconceived ideas about dwarf planets? Classes are designed to encourage student engagement and follow their curiosity. Week One: Introduction Solar system review History and exploration of Pluto Week Two: Geology, atmosphere, and other features Week Three: Moons and orbit Week Four: Pluto’s context in the solar system and planetary science This is a highly interactive course. Students will learn through discussion and a highly visual lecture. There is no textbook for this class. Learners participation and questions are regularly encouraged.
