Digital Photography Using Manual Settings
In this 8 week course, students will take their cameras out of auto and learn how to control the manual settings for special situations as well as for creating artistic photographs.

1 hour per week. Students will be assigned one hands on photography assignment for each video, based on the subject taught. Students will share the photograph to the classroom for teacher feedback.Class Experience
This class is scheduled as a self paced class. That means, we won't have any live meetings, but we will still interact with assignments and personal feedback. This course is broken up into 7 different lessons. You will have a photo taking assignment after each lesson. After you have completed your assignment, you will upload your photo to the classroom for personal feedback. It is highly recommended that you complete your assignment and receive feedback before you go on to the next assignment. Please Note: This is a hands on class that works best with students submitting photographs for discussion.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to apply various manual settings to the camera based on the external environment. They will be able to assess the situations available for photographing and using the settings they've learned, be able to take a properly exposed photograph. Students will be able to use their manual settings to create light painting, bokeh, and to take photographs in low light situations.
Syllabus
7 Lessons
over 7 WeeksLesson 1:
Exposure Triangle
We will discuss aperture, ISO, and shutter speed and how these aspects work together to effect exposure.
Assignment: Take your camera out of auto mode and put it in M or Manual mode. Adjust aperture, ISO, and shutter speed separately to see how they effect your photos. Make note of what your settings are so that you can share them with the class and we will discuss. 1 assignment

Lesson 2:
Bokeh
We will discuss how we use aperture and zoom to create a bokeh effect on photos. We will also discuss how we will need to adjust the other aspects of the exposure triangle when we change our aperture.
Assignment: Set your aperture to as low as it will go and take photos to achieve a blurry background. Don't forget to save your settings. 1 assignment

Lesson 3:
Shutter Speed
We will discuss how shutter speed effects our photos and how to use this to create special effects in our photos. Some of the effects we will discuss are water features, light streaks, and sports photos. We will also discuss how we will need to adjust the other aspects of the exposure triangle when we use a slow shutter speed.
Assignment: Use shutter speed to create a special effect in your photo. Be sure to save your settings! 1 assignment

Lesson 4:
Taking Photographs in Low Light Situations
We will discuss how we can change the settings in our camera to maximize the lighting in darker situations. Discussion will include adjusting aperture, shutter speed, and ISO and the pros and cons of using each of these as a priority.
Assignment: Take a photo in low light but make sure that it is properly exposed. Feel free to use additional lighting on your subject but adjust your settings to get the effect you want. Save your settings to share. 1 assignment
