US Grade Kindergarten - 1
In this nature journaling circle time, we will meet 4 times per week. Each week there will be a nature-based theme that we will study and learn about. Each day the learners will practice a different subject area and connect it to the week's nature journal theme. We will celebrate everyone's work and I will offer lots of encouragement and support to each child. This is meant to instill the learners with confidence around core subject areas and build a deep love of nature in the process. Come and join us in our social nature journal circle time where we will learn and practice the core subjects of art, literacy, science, oral storytelling, listening skills, and math. Week 1: Acorns Week 2: Barn Owls Week 3: Snowflakes Week 4: Ladybugs Each day's subject schedule: Monday Art: Weekly theme introduced. We will do a guided drawing activity related to the theme. We will add color to our week's nature journal theme to better enable the students to identify it in nature. Tuesday Writing, Reading, and Storytelling: Diagram/label the anatomy and function. This will give learners a chance to practice their reading and writing skills. This is a chance for storytelling! Learners make connections to the week's theme. We will make connections to ourselves, other aspects of nature, books, and to the world. I will use prompts to get learners talking and sharing. The students are welcome to bring items to this lesson to enhance their storytelling. This will be shared orally but it can also be recorded in written words or pictures! If time permits, we will also read a poem or short story related to the week's theme. Wednesday Science: Learn and record basic facts, scientific name, classification, habitat, geography, and the life cycle. Thursday Math: Look at the calendar and weather to record in their journals upon completion of the week's nature journal entry. Any counting, measurement, estimates, or time will be added to their nature journal entry. This will also be a time to review the week's nature theme content. In addition to this, we will enhance their speaking skills through show and tell! Children have a natural tendency to love nature, so let's build on their love of learning and nature combined. Stay wild and curious! *As with all ongoing classes, these are stand-alone lessons and learners can join at any time!

I’m a certified teacher in Elementary Education with my Master’s in Education Leadership, with experience in both in the US and internationally. My family and I had the privilege of living overseas for 15 years, teaching in international schools around the globe. I've lived in New Zealand, Kazakhstan, Thailand, and Bosnia and Herzegovina! I value teaching small groups, students from diverse backgrounds, instilling curiosity in my students, and encouraging students to take ownership of their learning. Over the course of my 18 years in the classroom, I have gained valuable insight into best practices and ways to connect with learners. I strive for each of my learners to know that I care deeply about them and their education. Connection is the base for all authentic learning.
On Outschool, I am teaching an array of different classes: math camps, problem solving, traveling, book clubs, nature journaling, tutoring, choose-your-own-adventure, reading comprehension courses, and novel studies to list a few. I believe in smaller class sizes to ensure quality of education and engagement.
Outside of teaching, I am an avid long-distance trail runner, reader, and traveler! I'm equally passionate about all three. I love anything outdoors. Travel has taught me valuable life-long lessons that I love sharing with others. I have a teacher husband (also on Outschool!), and two young children that I adore.
