Beginner - Intermediate Level
Students will code their own flying Santa game in Scratch, a block-based programming language developed at MIT. This class has been designed for students ages 6-10 with any level of coding experience - all are welcome! Students will learn: - How to think like a game designer! - How to code Santa’s sleigh to move with the arrow keys - How to use loops and cloning to create an endless stream of presents for Santa to collect - More advanced students will learn how to create a variable to count how many presents they collect The class will be highly interactive since we cap our classes at 6 students. The teacher will work with students to create a project they can be proud of while answering questions and providing support along the way. Here’s what your student can expect to do during class: - Welcome + Introductions (5 minutes) - Scratch Setup + Login (5 minutes) - Warm up with holiday trivia (10 minutes) - Code a flying santa game in Scratch! (about 60 minutes) - Student Project Showcase + Say Goodbye (10 minutes) > Note for Parents: Your student will need: - Access to a laptop or desktop computer with Zoom installed and screen-sharing enabled - An internet connection of 3mbs+ - A working speaker, microphone and webcam - all Windows and Mac operating systems of the past five years are supported Note: iPads are not compatible this coding class. Please make sure an adult is on hand for the first five minutes of class to help set-up and tackle troubleshooting.
Learning Goals
After completing this class, students will be comfortable coding and creating projects with Scratch. Even more importantly, they will have gained an understanding of foundational coding concepts including sequencing, loops, conditional statements, and variables. At Cypher, our goal is to help students become future-ready, and we know that these core skills will serve our students for the rest of their lives.

Parental Guidance
Students will use Scratch to participate in class. Students must access the Scratch account using a laptop or a computer in class (no smartphone or tablets). Students will use their own Scratch account to code while following instructions from the teacher. Students may continue to use their Scratch account outside of class.

Your student will need: - Access to a laptop or desktop computer with Zoom installed and screen-sharing enabled - An internet connection of 3mbs+ - A working speaker, microphone and webcam - all Windows and Mac operating systems of the past five years are supported Note: iPads are not compatible for this coding class. Please make sure an adult is on hand for the first five minutes of class to help set-up and tackle troubleshooting.
