Madeleine L’angle said, “ A book, too, can be a star, a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out in to the expanding universe.” Literature is the magical gateway to our ever expanding universe. Discover the fantasy worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Roald Dahl, Lewis Carroll, Richard Adams and others! This course will explore a range of fantasy novels through discussion about plot, context, character development, theme, and literary devices. This is a discussion-based class and debate is encouraged. No opinion is too wild as long as it can be backed up with reasoning and evidence. The aim of this club is to provide a foundation for students to study literature, to encourage critical thinking and to explore ways of reaching inference and connotation through logic. Expressing opinion is a vital element of literary analysis. In this class students will be equipped with the literary tools to unpack the journey of the hero. Each week we will discuss the assigned chapters. Student can expect activities such as debates, role-play, journaling and more. Students can join at any time. Schedule: Week 1 The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien Entering a Fantasy World and the Unsuspecting Hero Week 2 The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien Training to be a Hero and Gandalf’s role as Guardian and Guide Week 3 The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien Tolkien’s use of Song in his Narrative Week 4 The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien Tolkien’s use Foreshadowing and the Introduction of Gollum Some of the titles planned for this course are: The Hobbit Chronicles of Narnia Alice in Wonderland Inkheart

Teacher expertise and credentials
I love the many facets of language. From the understated to the extreme, from the implied to the direct, so much can be expressed and learned once you wield the magic of literacy. To empower students to express themselves clearly and succinctly and enable them to understand the subtleties of others' ideas, is what led me to pursue the art of language learning and teaching. I’ve had students in my classroom from all over the world: from Africa, Germany, Switzerland, Brazil, Turkey, China, France, America, Canada to Japan.
In tandem with literacy, I have a deep appreciation of the value of literature. We are all inherently storytellers. We share the experiences of our lives through tales shaped by our worldview. We have the inbuilt ability to process stories. As a result, literature study is an essential part of any student’s syllabus. Through the analysis of classical literature we can open doors to new ideas that would have previously been closed to us. This enables us to learn how to think in a critical way and develop empathy as we journey with characters through their adventures, good fortune, and hardships. Vicariously learning through characters’ mistakes and successes, we reflect on our own perspectives. As a last point and possibly one that is most visibly practical, reading good writing with rich vocabulary and beautiful sentence structure helps us to become good writers. In my classes, my curriculum is almost always based on literature.
In my journey as a language specialist, I have studied and qualified in the following areas:
M.A. in Linguistics (cum laude)
B.A. in Psychology (with honors)
B.A. in Media and Communications (with honors)
CELTA
In each lesson I strive to adapt to the requirements and levels of each student in a way that fosters engagement and participation from each child. I am committed to your child’s success. By creating an inclusive, nurturing classroom environment with activities that use a variety of learning styles, I aim to maximize each student's learning potential during our time together and beyond the lesson. I hope that your child’s enrolment in my class will open new doors for them and nurture their inherent curiosity.
I look forward to supporting you and your child in your learning journey.
