Materials needed for the craft: - 6X6 inch thin cardboard piece - 1/2 dozen egg carton - 1 sheet of green tissue paper - scissors - liquid glue or glue stick - markers, color pencils or crayons - pencil with eraser - white, soft, air-drying clay such as model magic or Playdoh In this class, students will create a 3D craft while they learn about chickens and their eggs. Before we begin the lesson, we will participate in an ice breaker to get to know each other better and to make everyone feel comfortable. I will begin the class by introducing a few vocabulary words: oviparous, embryo, incubate and broody. Students will have an opportunity to talk about what they know about the subject and to ask questions. During this portion of the lesson, I will act as a facilitator as students take the lead discussing ideas about the topic. I will also show students a short video to activate their prior knowledge. Next, we will begin working on our craft. While students are creating their craft, I will make sure to provide plenty of guidance to help students complete the project on their own. I will also make sure everyone is working on the same thing at the same time. During the drawing lesson, I will start by using simple lines and shapes to make sure everyone feels successful and confident.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of oviparous animals, such as chickens, while creating a 3D craft using an egg carton, cardboard, clay and other materials.
