Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
In this 5 day summer camp we will be creating something new each day. This will be my 3rd year of doing summer camps and almost every section each summer sells out! We will be discovering and experimenting with all of the elements of art such as line, form, color, texture, shape, and space. We will be using minimal supplies so that it is easy to prepare for each day. In fact, most or all of the supplies are things that you already have at home. I am enthusiastic about creating art and patient when teaching. Each student learns at their own pace and I do everything that I can to make sure that each student feels successful. I have taught Kindergarten through 8th grade art in person and online so I am very comfortable with the format. All learners are welcome! Everyone can create beautiful art regardless of their creative ability!

Monday - Learn how to draw and paint yourself with crazy hair - In this lesson, I will be doing a step-by-step lesson on how to draw a fun self-portrait showing a crazy hair effect made by watercolors and a straw. Learners can also draw with crayon if watercolor is not available. Students will need paper, a pencil, watercolor paint, a paint brush, a dish for water, and something to color with. Colored pencils work great for this lesson! Element of art focus - color, line, pattern, and form
Tuesday - Styrofoam watercolor marker prints. For this lesson, learners will need a Styrofoam plate, scissors, water soluble markers, and a piece of paper. Element of art focus - color, line, and pattern.
Wednesday - Cardboard relief structure. For this lesson, learners will need 2 bathroom tissue cardboard rolls cut into 1/2-inch pieces, a piece of sturdy paper or a cereal box, glue, a small bowl, and markers. I will go over in depth the day before how to prepare for this class and alternatives to materials. We will be making beautiful cardboard relief sculptures by gluing pieces of cardboard to a sturdy surface to create a beautiful mandala using symmetry.
Thursday - How to draw "The Cow with the Subtle Nose" by artist Jean Dubuffet. Learners will learn how to draw the famous artwork created by Jean Dubuffet and have fun crumpling up their work in order to create the final product! Element of art - texture and color.
Friday - Water color summer portrait. Learn how to draw a self-portrait complete with sunglasses and a beach or pool! We will be drawing with a sharpie and then using either crayons or watercolor paints to color.

Hi! My name is Jana Beckstead and I have been teaching for 21 years. I started my career teaching 3rd grade for 2 years and then moved on to teach 2nd grade for 5 years. Following that, I taught Kindergarten (5 years), 4th grade (5 years), and Kindergarten through 6th grade art (3 years). During the height of the pandemic, I taught Kindergarten through 6th grade virtually. This year I am teaching 7th and 8th grade reading and writing in middle school. I also have 5 children of my own and 2 grandchildren. My husband is in the military and we also have 4 sweet dogs and a bearded dragon named Mona.

I graduated from Arizona State University with my Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies. I worked for a newspaper at that time in advertising. When my children started school, I myself went back to school and received my Post Bachelor Certification in k-8 education. I also received my Early Elementary endorsement, Structured English Immersion Endorsement, and Art Endorsement. Along with my certification, I have attended hundreds of hours of professional development in the school district that I teach in. I absolutely love teaching; it is my passion. I can't wait to share my knowledge and creative abilities with your children through the love of reading and art.
