The Arts of the Middle Ages

In this eight-week course, students will learn about the Medieval arts of literature, art, music, and the culinary arts.

Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students will be reading a book from the period, I will provide an online copy for the students. I will be handing out a packet to be completed about the book. Students will also have a project of their choice from the sections listed. All instructional material will be provided at the start of class.

Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
In this class, students will be learning about Medieval art, literature, architecture, and cooking. The course is divided into four sections.

Section 1: Literature- students will be learning about the evolution of literature from the 500s CE through to the 1400s. We will also look at some of the most famous works of literature. Students will also be given a reading list to choose one book from to read by the end of the course. 

Section 2: Art - in this section, we will look at art in various forms and discuss the famous works of the time. Students will be given the option to complete either an art project, or one from sections three and four. 

Section 3: Music- students will be introduced to the different instruments played during this time period. We will also listen to a few selections of music and get to know the people who wrote the pieces.

Section 4: Culinary - I'm this class, we will look at the art of cooking and how recipes transformed in the later portion of the period. We will also cover what people would have grown in their gardens. This sections project is to try making a recipe from the time period. 

The class itself will have live lectures with a slideshow presentation. Reading and projects will be for outside of class time. Discussion in the class is highly encouraged. 

A bonus section will be posted on Nearpod about architecture and gothic art during this period.

Lesson 1:
Literature
 Introduction to Literature of the Middle Ages. We will begin by looking at literature and manuscripts from Great Britain. During this week, there will also be an assigned book to be finished by the end of the class.

Literature
 During this week, we will move on to literature from France and Italy. We will talk about writings from the early period through to the romantic novels about King Arthur.

 In this section, we will look at art from the early part of the medieval period (500s - 800s).
