In this class, students will be learning about Medieval art, literature, architecture, and cooking. The course is divided into four sections. Section 1: Literature- students will be learning about the evolution of literature from the 500s CE through to the 1400s. We will also look at some of the most famous works of literature. Week 1Lesson 1LiteratureIntroduction to Literature of the Middle Ages. We will begin by looking at literature and manuscripts from Great Britain. During this week, there will also be an assigned book to be finished by the end of the class.Week 2Lesson 2LiteratureDuring this week, we will move on to literature from France and Italy. We will talk about writings from the early period through to the romantic novels about King Arthur.Week 3Lesson 3ArtIn this section, we will look at art from the early part of the medieval period (500s - 800s).Week 4Lesson 4ArtIn this section, we will focus on art following the Carolingian Rennaissance of the 800s.Week 5Lesson 5ArchitecturePart one of the architecture class focuses on the Roman building blocks of medieval architecture. This will be followed by an exploration of the stonework of the period, and how it was used to build castles and cathedrals.Week 6Lesson 6ArchitectureIn part two of this portion of the class, we will be covering wood construction from the time of the Vikings through to half-timbered buildings that mark out the late Medieval period in England, leading into the Tudor Era.Week 7Lesson 7Culinary ArtsSection one of the final portion of the class will be about the different types of food eaten and grown during the Middle Ages. We will look at garden construction, what apothecaries sold in terms of spices and specialty goods and talk about the different types of meat that would have been hunted or farmed.Week 8Lesson 8Culinary ArtsIn our final portion of the class, we will dive into recipes and books that feature home life. I will host and provide videos on a few cooking demonstrations. We will also review our books that we began the first week of class and look at the final projects of students who wish to share what they created.
Students will gain a better understanding of art in the Middle Ages.
I have a Master of Arts in Early European History and I've been teaching on the Kiddle Ages for six years. Among my other classes are courses on medieval architecture and cooking. I teach medieval literature in private tutoring sessions.
Homework Offered
Students will be reading a book from the period, I will provide an online copy for the students. I will be handing out a packet to be completed about the book. Students will also have a project of their choice from the sections listed. All instructional material will be provided at the start of class.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
