Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
This is an 8-week series. Class meets once every week.
Students will learn to use the principles of anatomy to draw a dragon’s body. They will learn how to build the initial structure of a dragon’s skull, limbs and wings along with the shading of finer details such as scales, horns and eyes.
Students will be introduced to the concept of dragons as a conglomerate of different parts of avian and reptile bodies in subsequent weeks, they will explore these different anatomical forms, skeletal and muscular structures. They will understand how these concepts can be applied, adapted and manipulated to create a realistic rendering of a dragon.
Once they build a solid foundation and keep practicing, they will be able to sketch a multitude of fantastic dragons with confidence. Classes are highly interactive and students will have the opportunity to socialize and share their ideas in a fun and upbeat environment.

Schedule
Week 1 – Head Structure & Perspectives
Students will explore how the cranial bone structures of dragons are based on real life reptilian skulls. They will practice this by drawing the dragon’s heads from different perspectives
Week 2 – Eyes, Scales and Horns
Students will use the concept of 2D shapes and make them 3D by adding highlights and shadows to their forms.
Week 3 – Side Profile Dragon Head Study
Students will apply what they have learned so far by drawing a dragon’s side profile, and adding shading to its facial features to create a realistic look.
Week 4 – Wing Structures & Perspectives
Students will observe the structure of wings based on bats and birds. They will practice manipulating these forms to show dragon wings at rest, while flexed and in-flight.
Week 5 – Hands, Feet and Tails Structures
Students will observe the skeletal structures of limbs, they will understand how bone structures can be used to create different types of hands, feet and tails on their dragons. They will practice adding claws and scales for a realistic look.
Week 6 – Dragon Full Body Form Study
Students will understand the fundamentals of a dragon’s anatomical structure by capturing the landmark structures of its body and studying it's skeletal structure. They will draw a standing dragon with flexed wings.
Week 7 – Fire Breathing Flying Dragon Study Wk. 1
Students will use their acquired knowledge and apply them to the construction of a challenging final dragon drawing. Students will focus on capturing the pose and gesture of the dragon’s body, keeping proportion and balance in mind while adding the bulk of the body.
Week 8 – Fire Breathing Flying Dragon Study Wk. 2
Students will focus on the fine details of their dragon by using blending and shading techniques. They will add highlights and shadows to all parts of the body to create a realistic rendition of the dragon.
