Beginner Level
This is an 8-week series. Class will meet once every week. Students who have completed this series are encouraged to continue with Anime Pencil Sketching and Drawing Full Semester Part 2 - Full Body & Movement: https://outschool.com/classes/e6eb85af-c95f-48be-bfe6-b337aee879cd In this Level 1 series, students will learn how to use pencil sketching techniques to draw popular anime characters. They will use proper sketching, shading and blending techniques. This class will focus on the head and face. Students will start with head angle study and how to detail each facial features like eyes, nose, mouth and ear. Instructors will demonstrate how to identify basic shapes within a character's head, facial measurements and proportions, facial expressions with eyes, eyebrows and mouth, hair, etc. While approaching a new character every week, students will also learn how to take one anime or manga style face and tweak its features and expression to give an appearance of a different personality. We will also discuss hairstyles that are well suited for each character type. Week 1 - Face Study - Students will learn the construction ideas for mapping out the face and features. We will discuss several techniques for understanding front and side planes, and how facial features are impacted when in various perspectives. Week 2 - Head Angle Study - Students will study how the head connects to the neck from the front and back. Then they will explore how the head shape changes when it is in various angles and perspectives. Week 3 - Deku from My Hero Academia (front view male head, level face) Week 4 - Tanjiro from Demon Slayer (front view male head, level face) Week 5 - Nezuko from Demon Slayer (front view female head, slightly angled up face) Week 6 - Bakugo from My Hero Academia (side view male head, level face) Week 7 - Zenitsu from Demon Slayer (3/4 view male head, level face) Week 8 - Inosuke from Demon Slayer (3/4 view male head, oblique angled face) This is a highly sought-after class for anime and manga enthusiasts who love Anime, Manga, Manga Drawing, Shoujo, Shounin, Bishoujo, Doujinshi and Kodomo Manga. Class is highly-interactive and students will have the opportunity to exchange their ideas and chat with other Anime fans. Students are encouraged to pursue their interests in anime and manga art with progressive classes on full body and motion techniques. _______________________________________ Please read below for frequently-asked questions on our policies: Mandatory Video Check-In Video check-in is mandatory for safety purposes per Outschool policy. Students are required to have their cameras on to allow the teacher to check in and verify each learner. After check-in, students have the option of either turning off their camera or leaving it on, whatever is their preference. Refunds & Missed Classes All of our classes are backed by Outschool’s standard policy. To receive a full refund, parents may withdraw or stop their subscription within 24 hours of payment OR 24 hours before class starts, whichever occurs earlier. No refunds are issued if a learner misses a live meeting. Recordings are made available in each classroom and can be watched at their convenience. Students are always welcome to reach out with any questions and share their work in the classroom. Class Recording Access Learners must JOIN A LIVE CLASS ONCE in order to lift Outschool's safety protocol and unlock access to video recordings of class meetings. In the event that no students are in the classroom at the assigned class time, the teacher will leave a message in the classroom and exit after ten minutes of waiting per Outschool policy. Minimum Enrollment & Class Cancellation A minimum of two learners is required for every class to run. In the event that we have to cancel a class, parents will be notified within 24 hours of class. Learners will have the option of either transferring to a more populated section of the same class or receiving a full refund, whichever is preferred. Technical Difficulties In the event of class delay/ cancellations due to unforeseeable technical issues, all families will be notified and a make-up section will be posted, or a refund will be issued if a make-up class cannot be scheduled.
Learning Goals
Students will master pencil sketching techniques to draw anime characters' heads and faces. They'll learn proper sketching, shading, and blending methods, focusing on facial features like eyes, nose, mouth, and ears. Instructors will guide students in identifying basic shapes within characters' heads, ensuring correct proportions and measurements. Students will also explore facial expressions, hairstyles, and personality variations. By the end, students will adeptly create diverse anime character portraits.

Teacher Allie May is a contemporary artist who loves to indulge in all mediums, but focuses most on drawing and painting. She is a graduate student in the BFA program at California State University Long Beach, and aims to pursue a career in teaching art. Her art influence began at a young age, but she considers herself “self-taught.” Allie is passionate about encouraging students to master the fundamental skills and technical aspects of creating, but also develop a style that is unique to each student. Her promise is to encourage a mindset where students are confident in themselves and their ability to create.
Teacher Angela is a versatile artist with a BFA in graphic design from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her expertise extends to various art forms, including still life, landscape, and figure drawing. She is also skilled in fashion, 3D clay design, animation, and photography. Teacher Angela is known for fostering an environment that encourages her students to think beyond conventional boundaries, recognizing the profound impact of creativity on learning and development.
Teacher Brittany
Teacher Brittany is a professional artist and illustrator. She holds a BA in Arts with a concentration on Visual Technology. She also gained valuable industry experience as Technology Lead and Animation Instructor at art schools. She has worked as a freelance concept artist and illustrator in game design. She utilizes a background in comics, storyboarding and animation to bring creative concepts to life. With a strong background in traditional and digital painting, Brittany is currently teaching a wide variety of classes in various mediums to merge her love for illustration, painting and game development.
Teacher Palm is a professional fashion and costume designer familiar with the complete product creation life cycle from initial concept to constructed design. She holds a degree in Fashion Design from The Parsons School of Design in New York. In addition to over 10 years of teaching art and fashion, she is also experienced in staging collections in numerous international Fashion Shows for luxury clients including Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, Ann Taylor and Kenneth Cole. She gained valuable industry experience in the capacity of Creative Consultant for designers, theaters and art schools. Palm is also proficient in a wide range of fine arts such as watercolor, oil, pencil, pastel, etc. and approaches her teachings with a calm mind, optimism and positive affirmation.
