Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
"Let's Learn" classes with Mrs. Kennedy are one time classes for individual learners. If you'd like to follow up on this class with tutoring, here's the link for more information: https://outschool.com/classes/11-pre-algebraalgebra-1-half-hour-tutoring-session-with-mrs-kennedy-ongoing-BgVYHlsc

In this 1:1 class, students receive individualized help on this specific Algebra topic: Multiplying binomials.

Learners in Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 practice problems such as these:
(x + 5)(x - 7)
(2x - 8)(x + 12)
There are two terms with parentheses around each term.

Learners use the distributive property and combine like terms. There are several commonly used methods for this process (sometimes called "FOIL" method, window method, or box method).

I teach the double distribution method but also allow students to use the method that makes the most sense to them, as well as whatever method they are required to use in their math class, if any.

I'll walk them through the process step-by-step.

I use scaffolded instruction, which simply means that I provide more support at the beginning and gradually students work more and more independently with each new problem. I provide guidance and feedback throughout the lesson.

I'm a high school math teacher with a master’s degree in Education, and I specialize in working with students who struggle with math.

Questions? Always feel free to message me here on Outschool.

Please note: Learners should be able to use the distributive property and combine like terms. If they need the prerequisite class, it is here: https://outschool.com/classes/algebra-students-lets-learn-distributive-property-and-combining-like-terms-ok4QLxEt#us83g7UbAV.

Is your learner failing math?

Does your teen say things like…

I can’t do math!
I’ll never get this.
I’m going to fail this math class!
I’m so dumb.

Well, you’re in the right place.

HI! I’m Mary Kennedy, certified math teacher, and I love working with students who struggle with high school math and doubt that they can do it.

I've taught Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 and have more than 20 years of teaching experience. My Master's degree is in Learning Disabilities.

In my classes, students connect their learning to critical thinking skills (includes reasoning, analysis, and perseverance) and growth mindset (“I haven’t learned this YET.”).

I strive to make the math concepts accessible to struggling learners.

Help your teen regain confidence and learn the skills they need to pass Algebra.

Don’t let math continue to disrupt your family’s life.

About Mrs. K.
I do life in a tiny tourist town with my husband and three kids (when they're home from college).

Twice, my family has had the unique and wonderful experience of hosting students from Southeast Asia in our home and community. We have maintained friendships with these students and their families for several years now through technology, despite our geographic distance.

I love working with students from every country and encourage their language skills in my math classes.
