What's included

6 live meetings
4 hrs 30 mins in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Daily homework. Plan on daily practice outside of classroom time. Practice is provided to learners after each new topic is introduced. The practice includes detailed answer keys for self-checking. Additionally, we will have about 5 minutes near the beginning of the following session for questions that came up while completing the practice. I'm available to answer questions by Outschool message between classes. I don't check or grade the homework individually.
Assessment
Optional Google forms quizzes are provided at checkpoints during the class. These are self-checking. The scores do not come to me. The learner is able to see what the score is and what problems were missed along with the correct answers.

Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 10
Beginner Level
Join me for a comprehensive 2-week mini-course designed to reinforce key Algebra 1 concepts from the linear functions unit.

At the end, I’ll wrap up with a thorough review to solidify your learner’s understanding.

💭What to Expect:

5 mins: Welcome/review previous day/answer essential questions from homework
10 mins: Introduce new concept with a real life application and related questions
20 mins: Practice skill needed for today’s concept
10 mins: Complete real life application problem/wrap up

-Scaffolded instruction. During each session, we'll start with more support and gradually work towards more independent problem-solving, ensuring a smooth learning curve.
-Daily homework. Plan on daily practice outside of classroom time.
-Weekly mini assessments. These are self-checking, 5 problem assessments to help your learner check for understanding.
-Feedback and support. Between sessions, learners can message me with specific questions for personalized feedback. I'm here to guide your learner every step of the way.

This class offers the support and structure your learner needs for success.

❓FAQ:
-What if my learner has to miss a session? Not a problem. I'll record an instructional video covering the topics we would have done together in class. Your learner can watch the recording as soon as it pops up in the classroom (usually within an hour of the class) and complete the homework using the recording.

💯Assessments: Optional Google forms mini quizzes are provided at checkpoints during the class. These are self-checking. The scores do not come to me. The learner is able to see what the score is and what problems were missed along with the correct answers.

Learning Goals
Learners will...
Relate the domain of a function to its graph and, where applicable, to the quantitative relationship it describes
Use function notation
Calculate and interpret the average rate of change of a function
Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph
Calculate and interpret the average rate of change of a function (presented symbolically or as a table) over a specified interval
Estimate the rate of change from a graphGraph linear functions
Create equations in two variables and use them to solve problems

Other Details

Pre-Requisites
Learners should have taken or currently taking Pre-Algebra or above.
Supply List
Students are required to bring a pencil and notebook paper (or write on a tablet/ipad).

Additionally, students should have a calculator with them that is not the standard phone calculator. I highly recommend the TI 30XS Multiview for its use of square roots. Message me if you'd like a link to order it from Amazon (approximately $20).

Students will need to download and/or print the provided pdf's I will share throughout the class.

Is your learner failing math?

Does your teen say things like…

I can’t do math!
I’ll never get this.
I’m going to fail this math class!
I’m so dumb.

Well, you’re in the right place.

HI! I’m Mary Kennedy, certified math teacher, and I love working with students who struggle with high school math and doubt that they can do it.

I've taught Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 and have more than 20 years of teaching experience. My Master's degree is in Learning Disabilities.

In my classes, students connect their learning to critical thinking skills (includes reasoning, analysis, and perseverance) and growth mindset (“I haven’t learned this YET.”).

I strive to make the math concepts accessible to struggling learners.

Help your teen regain confidence and learn the skills they need to pass Algebra.

Don’t let math continue to disrupt your family’s life.

About Mrs. K.
I do life in a tiny tourist town with my husband and three kids (when they're home from college).

Twice, my family has had the unique and wonderful experience of hosting students from Southeast Asia in our home and community. We have maintained friendships with these students and their families for several years now through technology, despite our geographic distance.

I love working with students from every country and encourage their language skills in my math classes.
