課堂經歷

Taste the flavors of Fall in treats made by your young chef. The menu we will follow includes:
Class 1 - Apple Bake
Class 2 - Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies
Class 3 - No-Bake Cinnamon Rolls

The recipe and a note regarding any prep work will be posted in the classroom about one week prior to class. 

During class, the chefs are encouraged to do as many steps as their age and skill level allow. We will measure the ingredients in class, however, it is encouraged to have the ingredients on hand. I will make the recipes along with the chefs, so I can demonstrate the techniques.  

Some classes require some prep prior to our meeting. For Class 1, please have the apples peeled, cored, and sliced and the butter softened. For Class 2, please have the coconut oil softened. For Class 3, please have the crust cut off of your bread and the butter softened.

Some recipes may include dairy, gluten, and/or eggs. Please check ingredients for allergens. Chefs may need assistance with knives and using the oven.

Hello! I'm Jessica McKenna. I have a love of learning and enjoy bringing that passion to the classroom. My goal is to inspire your child to be passionate about learning as well. 

I have 20 years of teaching experience both in-person and online. My journey teaching on Outschool began in April 2020 and I have been lucky enough to work with learners from all but one continent. In addition to my years teaching on this platform, I have also worked with children ages 3-13 in a variety of in-person capacities, including as a teacher, as a curriculum specialist, and the director of an early education center. I have been the educator of adults as well as children and have had the opportunity to teach other professionals on a wide range of topics including Foundations of Early Education and Positive Guidance in the Classroom.

I have my Bachelor’s Degree in both Art History and English from Rutgers University and am certified to teach Kindergarten through 5th Grade. I am also trained in the Handwriting Without Tears approach to learning print and cursive penmanship and base my handwriting classes and tutoring around this program. Even with the ability to use technology to communicate, I believe that handwriting is an important, basic life skill that should not go unlearned. Cooking is another basic skill that is important, and it offers the opportunity to practice other subjects, most notably math, reading, and science. 

My aforementioned love of learning lends itself to my being a life-long learner. I frequently participate in professional development and educational experiences, such as Integrated STEM and Working with Diverse Learners.

When I'm not in the virtual classroom or reading Jane Austen, I enjoy traveling, cooking, and spoiling my cats.
