Sports Physiology and Anatomy for Teens is an eight-week course that aims to provide a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology as it relates to sports and exercise. The course is designed for teenagers who are interested in sports and want to improve their performance. This course on sports physiology and anatomy for teens will be presented in Canva and recorded for students. Throughout the course, students will receive lesson recaps, optional videos to watch, quizzes and activities, all of which will be available on Google Drive. Week one will cover the different branches of sports physiology, including anatomy and exercise physiology. In week two, students will learn about skeletal muscle anatomy, types of muscles, muscle contractions, and the sliding filament theory. Week three will focus on ATP and energy systems, how ATP is generated, and how to use multiple energy systems in your sport or activity. In week four, we will discuss muscle strength and endurance, including muscle types, muscle fiber types, and the importance of nutrition for training. Week five will cover anatomical terminology and the importance of using it in sports and exercise. Week six will introduce students to energy expenditure and how it is calculated, while week seven will focus on athlete types and the sports nutrition pyramid. Finally, in week eight, we will explore the physiological effects of aging, including changing lung volumes, muscle development, and skeletal changes. Overall, this course on sports physiology and anatomy for teens aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of how their bodies work during sports and exercise, and how they can optimize their performance through proper nutrition, training, and rest. Note: Your learner will not miss any content by “enrolling late”! This means there will be videos waiting for your learner and they can get started right now! Lesson Outline: Week 1: Introduction to Sports Physiology & Anatomy The different branches of sports physiology ( anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology etc) Week 2: Skeletal Muscle Anatomy What are muscles? 3 Types of muscles (smooth, cardiac, skeletal) Training large muscles vs smaller muscle groups, kinds of exercises Anatomy of the skeletal muscle What are muscle contractions and how are they formed Involuntary vs involuntary muscles Sliding filament theory Week 3: ATP & Energy Systems What is ATP How is ATP generated 3 Energy systems (ATP-PC, Lactic Acid System, Aerobic System) Using multiple energy systems in your sport or activity Week 4: Muscle Strength & Endurance 3 Muscle types (SO, FO, and FG muscles) Muscle fiber types (Type 1 and Type 2 - and what activities utilize these muscles, where are they found in the body etc) Muscle Types vs Age What are the mitochondria What is myoglobin What is muscle power vs strength Muscle size and coordination The importance of Leucine for muscle growth What is lifting to failure and should you try it? (pros/cons) What is hypertrophy The importance of nutrition for training Week 5: Anatomical Terminology Why use anatomical terminology in sports and exercise What is the anatomical position Anatomical planes (Saggittal Plan, transverse plane, coronal plane), different movements for each plane and muscles worked. Terms of direction - superior, anterior, posterior etc Week 6: Energy Expenditure How is energy expenditure calculated? (BMR, TEF, TEA) What is an indirect calorimetry Schofield equation Energy cost What is the metabolic equivalent (MET) vs Physical Activity Level (PAL) and how it is used to determine calorie needs What is considered light activities vs intense activities Week 7: Athlete Types Definition of sport vs exercise What is sedentary behavior 5 Athlete types (strength athlete, sprinter, power sport athlete, endurance athlete and team sports athlete) The sports nutrition pyramid (understanding macronutrients, and micronutrients for optimizing performance) Week 8: Physiological Effects of Aging Age and the CV system Lung volumes for athletes Muscle Development in Children vs Teens What is sarcopenia and how to prevent it How body composition affects age Thermoregulation in Children vs Teens Skeletal changes throughout the lifecycle What is osteoporosis Changes in recovery periods throughout the lifecycle.
