NOTE: on my class page you will find social studies sections for grades 1-5 and American History.

This social studies class mainly addresses early American history standards for grades 5-7. Due to the number of geographical areas (continents / countries), people (ancient and modern), causes and dates there is a lot to learn. It takes a number of years to master the concepts. If students show growth in the area of history, I will then add on standards such as geography and economics.

I use diagraming, note-taking, books, video clips and hands-on activities to create an interactive learning environment to help students stay engaged. The concepts under social studies can be harder concepts for learners to grasp - it’s not as cut and dry as a science topic. Due to this, there will be a lot of hands-on learning. Students will begin to understand the world they live in and discuss what their roles and responsibilities are.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Utah Teaching Certificate in Special Education
Master's Degree in Education from Florida State University
I have a master’s degree though the department of education and have been teaching and working with students for the past 20+ years. I am a licensed K-12 special education teacher and was also the academic achievement specialist at my previous in-person school to make sure that all regular education K-8 students were making adequate progress in their academic studies each year. Prior to that I was a therapist for kids ages 5-17 who struggled with behaviors at home and at school.

Throughout my experiences as an art therapist and then as a special education teacher, I have seen that children learn best when engaged in hands-on acitivities. They tend to retain information much more effectively when enaged in active learning. Besides learning the class standards, one of the other focuses for students in this class will be on actively participating.
