Prior to this class, learners will be required to read or listen to the Oscar Wilde fairy tale "The Remarkable Rocket." This is a public domain story that can easily be found online. During class, learners will discuss the moral or lesson of the fairy tale, while they make firework art. For the first art project, students will need to have black construction paper and tubes of glitter glue. While we discuss the story, learners will engage in the soothing project of making firework art with glitter glue. When the projects are finished, students can show them to one another. After this discussion, students will make a second firework craft. This one is a little more involved. For this craft, students will need a toilet paper roll, glue or tape, craft wire or pipe cleaners, and pretty paper (construction paper, foil paper, wrapping paper, whatever the students would like to use for their fireworks). I will show students how to make a fun firework craft to coincide with our story discussion. This class will involve teacher and student discussion and sharing. It is a hands-on class because learners often become more involved in discussions of literature when they, also, are creating art and having fun.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn the value of classic fairy tales and of creating their own artistic masterpieces.

My name is Kandy Crosby-Hastings. I teach history, classic literature, and writing classes. I have two sons who were homeschooled from preschool through their high school graduation. I also have experience working in the public school system and as an online ESL teacher. I hold bachelor's degrees in education and religion and master's degrees in human services, history, and professional writing - all from Liberty University. I adore student-directed, critical thinking-based, fun learning. I believe students learn more when they enjoy what they are learning and are fully involved in the learning process.
Some fun facts about me are I began my professional writing journey by interviewing country music singers. I self-published my own magazine for a few years, in addition to freelance writing. Now, most of my writing takes the form of historical research. One of my most recent published articles tells the story of Thomas Hutchinson, a Loyalist during the American Revolution. My favorite historical era is the nineteenth century. Some of my research in this area earned first place in a 2018 research symposium.
