We will discuss the short story of the Gift of the Magi and some literary elements and devices that go along with it. ---This Week’s Reading: The Tell-Tale Heart (Short Story provided by teacher).
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Intro to Poe (Gothic Literature) and The Tell-Tale Heart
We will discuss the short story of the Tell-Tale Heart, the background of Edgar Allan Poe, and some literary elements and devices that go along with the story. ---This Week’s Reading: Raven and Jekyll and Hyde (Short Story and novel provided by teacher). If you want to get a head start on Number the Stars, you can begin reading that as well.

  • Students will leave my class with a well rounded foundation in classic and current literature. All of the content covered I have taught in the classroom on various grade levels and have seen students grow to enjoy it.
About the Teacher:
I am a certified teacher in various subjects, but English is my main and very first certification. I have taught it for over 9 years. I am very versed in Literature across the time frames and have taught them for many years in charter and in the classroom. I have taught middle and high school levels and taught this very content. I can promise that I make this class fun. We will cover short stories, Shakespeare, and more. We will also cover time frames and things seen throughout history in reference to literature. This class has activities and small assignments each week that we will discuss in class the following week.

Detalles: There will be an assignment weekly to do that will go along with the story and we will discuss their homework in the following class if there is time. Weekly reading is mandatory, but all other activities are optional.

Detalles: I offer weekly assessments most weeks in the folder for your student to take on the topics we covered. Students who want to test their knowledge of the content can take these and submit to be added into their grade. Most of the time, answer pages are also linked in there as well, but in the case there is none, submit for grading.

Detalles: Grades will be provided via request but require students to submit weekly work to be graded and then averaged at the end for an overall grade. Please let me know the week you enter class if you wish to have a grade, and I will keep track of progress throughout the class.

The novels and works we will cover discuss topics that might be difficult. This is why I urge parents to check out the reads or the synopses of them before enrolling. Some of the books covered deal with topics including but not limited to: violence, rebellion, government, abuse, alcoholism, murder, crime, love, etc. We will discuss these as needed in reference to the stories and I do so with discretion. 

During class, learners will be encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions on the themes and ideas presented in the books. Themes such as isolation, friendship, duty, identity, mortality, and more.
