When people here ADHD often the first thought that comes to mind is someone who can’t focus or pay attention. In reality the relationship between attention and ADHD is far more complex than many people understand. In this class students will learn more about how their brains work to help them understand that the uniqueness of their brain, which no doubt causes some challenges, has some major positives as well. We will discuss tools to help manage their challenges as well as strategies to help them use the “superpowers” of ADHD. Students will learn what attention is in the concept of brain function and what is different in a neurotypical and ADHD brain. Students will learn about attention regulation and how it affects both the ability to stay focused on one task but also causes difficulties shifting attention from one task to another. The students will also learn about the concept of Hyperfocus (which I think is the ADHD superpower). This class is structured in a way that helps the students apply what they are learning to their real world experiences to help them better understand. Students will be asked to engage in discussion to both keep them engaged and help them connect with the material. Students will explore tools or strategies that they can use in their daily lives. In this class I aim to empower the students to see their ADHD in a positive way instead of solely as a negative. ADHD has_many amazing aspects to it but they are too commonly overlooked or misunderstood. Having myself grown up with ADHD I understand first hand what it can be like to face these challenges. I have found that the more I have learned about ADHD the more I have come to understand myself and how to advocate my needs. Through learning about myself I have learned to love my ADHD and my uniqueness. I aim in this class to help students on their own journeys learning about how they are and how to thrive with ADHD.
