CLASS SYNOPSIS
7th, 8th, and 9th grade students will enjoy the late winter season by studying this classic novel through analysis, discussion, and nonfiction text

OVERVIEW
    • This is a read-and-discuss course. Discussion revolves around analysis based on the chapters read.  Content listed below “CONTENT”
    • Students will read 2 to 3 chapters prior to class each class
    • The class will engage in analytical discussion revolving around instructor prompts/questions

CONTENT 
    • The Call of the Wild provides several opportunities for rich analytical discussion.
    • Literary element instruction (as opportunity presents itself from the text)
    • In order to develop a well-rounded analysis of the novel, students will be instructed on the biographical information of the author (Jack London), as well as the historical setting in which the novel was written in (Naturalist).  Students will create connections between this information and the content of the novel throughout the course. 
    • Class discussion will revolve around the following novel-centered themes:
        ‣ Brutality
        ‣ Animal Abuse
        ‣ Masculinity
        ‣ Endurance & Survival
        ‣ Instinct
        ‣ Primitivism

TEACHING STYLE
    • I want my students to discuss, interact, and learn from each other! Every chance I get,  I will encourage them to respond to other’s ideas
    • I hope to facilitate conversation, protect think-time, and pose questions that provoke deeper thought based on the central text
    • I hope that students feel as welcomed to think as they are challenged in their thinking. 
    • While I will challenge students to think deeply, their perspective will always be encouraged and celebrated
    • I love interacting with my students!  I will be apart of the conversation as well 😁
    • Lecture-style lessons will be taught to ensure all students comprehend concepts and themes

NOTE: This novel is intense and mature on several occasions. The following subjects will be approached with maturity and an educational perspective. SEXUAL CONTENT • VIOLENCE • This book is a survival story that includes brutal accounts of animal abuse and violence • Dogs are stolen, beaten, and fight to the death RACISM SEXISM AND SOCIAL NEGATIVITIES • ni**er is used when referring to a plant in the region • one of the characters dog's name is N*g, who is a black dog • Two characters are called "h*lf-br**ds" (NOTE: racial slurs will NOT be read aloud and will be used as opportunities to identify the regressive nature of the setting of the book and characters) • Toxic masculinity is exuded • The only female in the character is depicted as whiny, weak, and irrational (NOTE: these attributes will be used as opportunities to identify the regressive nature of the setting of the book and characters) PROFANITY • h*ll is used a handful of times throughout the book DRUGS/ALCOHOL • Men smoke pipes • Men are invited to drink alcohol but it is never depicted
