In this class, students will *read (prior to the class meeting) and discuss the short story (during the class meeting) The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. We will cover the themes, symbolism, and messages contained in this story. We will annotate The Yellow Wallpaper and also discuss its connections to other feminist works, such as those by Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf, as well as trace The Yellow Wallpaper's connections to the work of contemporary writers like Amanda Lovelace and Rupi Kaur. Students will read the short story prior to our class meeting. Upon enrollment, *a link to read The Yellow Wallpaper online will be provided. Also, I will provide a pdf file for students to reference as they read the story. The handout guides students in their annotation and helps them know what symbols, themes, and connections to look for. The handout also lists eight questions to consider after reading The Yellow Wallpaper. Of course, I also encourage students to look for and share their original thoughts and ideas and also any themes or symbols they notice that might not be listed on the handout. I am an enthusiastic teacher who encourages students to take charge of their learning, especially during the upper-middle and high school years. I consider myself a guide, and I want to help students develop their own thoughts and ideas so they can be lifelong learners. I will do some lecturing, but most of our class time will be spent in discussions about The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and the material found in the linked handout. There is no prior knowledge or experience required.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will improve their abilities to annotate, analyze, and discuss literature.

I wrote the blog for nearly three years before moving on to focus mainly on teaching. I have taught workshops about life with depression. I have other classes with books and poetry that reference mental illness. Any discussions around this topic will be handled carefully and will be discussed in literary terms (themes, symbolism, etc.)
