Join us for a fun writing challenge with a bit of a twist as we take our ideas from the date that our class takes place. Have you ever noticed that there seems to be a National Day for all sorts of things- some are very important and some are rather obscure (looking at you, National Awkward Moments Day)? Are you fascinated by things that happened in the past on any given day? You'll fit right in with us as we find out what makes the date stand out - whether it commemorates something cool, odd or significant, or if something happened on that day that deserves exploration. After we've found out some facts, and shared our thoughts and opinions on them- we'll create a piece of writing based on what we've learned. There will be two challenges to choose between- a creative piece of writing where you can exercise some artistic licence, and a more factual piece, which may ask you to demonstrate your powers of persuasion or reporting or perhaps a recount. Which will you choose? The best thing of all is that the same event won't come around for another year, so no two classes will be the same, which means you can always jump in for another fascinating fact and a choice of challenges on another day! Time permitting, learners will be encouraged to share their writing with the class. There is absolutely no pressure to do so, however, and, if preferred, learners can instead share their ideas via chat, upload into the classroom or send their piece of writing directly to me if they like. If learners don't want to share at all, that's fine too. FYI... Please note that as this is a One Time class, learners will have to enroll for each date separately if there's another topic that grabs their interest. Have a look and see what we'll be doing for the next few months... May: 4th - Star Wars Day! June: 8th - World Oceans Day July: 7th - World Chocolate Day!
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will:
learn about an event that took place on the date of the class or a day that it commemorates and gain understanding about the event or idea;
be able to participate in a discussion about the event and how it can be used as an inspiration for writing;
be able to make a choice about creative or more factual writing and produce a piece that incorporates the 'on this day' topic.

Orientación para padres
There may sometimes be more solemn events that take place on a day and on others more humourous or bizarre events. All content will be appropriate for the age that the class is aimed at, so it will be assumed that any learners just outside the age range are able to participate at that age level.
Lista de útiles escolares
A notebook or paper and something to write with, or a device to use for writing.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Writing is my passion and as well as majoring in English at university, along with Theatre Arts, I've almost 20 years of experience in teaching English in primary schools (4-11-year-olds). Over those years I have worked regularly with groups of children specifically on English writing skills. I've also worked with students o historic events as well as studying in my own time and accessing the rich historical sites around me. I've also celebrated many an odd National Day with our youth groups and with my family and look forward to exploring more!
