Reading comprehension is so important, not only for academic success but also for students to develop a love of reading for their own enjoyment (where they really stretch their vocabulary and see grammar and different writing styles in action). In our weekly ongoing class, we share a text and explore the different skills and strategies we can use to really get to grips with it. So that, over the weeks, we get used to reading a variety of writing styles and the different skills and techniques we may use for them, we'll be exploring both fiction and non-fiction texts. We'll explore skills such as using context to work out the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary, building an understanding of characters, inference, predicting what the text might be about or what will happen next, and so on. Where a text includes illustrations or photos, we'll look at how we can use them in our understanding and what they add to the text. Much of the class will be discussion based but there will sometimes be short writing activities. Learners don't have to attend every class to pick up and practice their skills, as the class is designed for students to be able to either attend regularly or dip in and out as required. Planned schedule for the next few weeks: WB 25th Mar: 'Eggs-citing' facts in a newspaper style WB 1st Apr: Non-fiction - facts about April Fools' Day WB 8th Apr: Fiction extract - The Curse of Cogstan House WB 15th: Ambush! A short story. Reading material will be resources used with permission, public domain works, or material that I have written myself.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Writing is my passion and as well as majoring in English at university, along with Theatre Arts, I have 20 years of experience in teaching English in primary schools. Over those years, I have worked regularly with learners (as a class, in groups, and individually) specifically on English reading and writing skills and teaching English online. I'm a great advocate of the belief that the experience of reading is far more than decoding words on a page.
