In this summer "camp", students will explore the craft of creative writing. Topics covered will include the key elements of plot, research, the three-act structure, character creation and development, conflict, dialogue, and editing. Students will be able to respond to daily writing prompts and will be able to share their work with the class if they feel comfortable. Young writers will be able to create original work and share with the teacher or other students for constructive commentary and discussion. The classes will be taught using a combination of lecture and discussion. Both new and experienced writers are welcome. Day 1: Introduction to Creative Writing On the first day of the five-day course, students will dive into the world of creative writing. They will be introduced to the fundamental concepts and key elements of the craft. The instructor will provide an overview of the course and its objectives. Students will gain a clear understanding of the importance of plot, research, and the three-act structure in creating compelling narratives. Day 2: Crafting Memorable Characters Building upon the foundation laid on the first day, students will focus on character creation and development. They will learn techniques for crafting believable and engaging characters that resonate with readers. Through interactive exercises and discussions, participants will explore various methods to bring their characters to life, considering their motivations, strengths, weaknesses, and how they evolve throughout the story. Day 2: Mastering Research and Dialogue Day three will delve into the crucial aspects of research and dialogue in creative writing. Students will examine different methods of research and explore how to effectively incorporate information into their stories to create accurate stories. Additionally, they will learn techniques for writing authentic and impactful dialogue, ensuring that conversations between characters feel natural and advance the plot. Day 3: Crafting Memorable Characters Building upon the foundation laid on the first day, students will focus on character creation and development. Day 5: Showcasing Your Craft On the final day, students will have the chance to showcase their creative writing skills. They will share excerpts from their works-in-progress and receive constructive feedback from both the instructor and their peers. This session will foster a supportive and collaborative environment, allowing students to refine their storytelling abilities and gain insights into the strengths and areas for improvement in their writing. Throughout the course, interactive discussions, group activities, and writing exercises will be integrated to enhance students' understanding and application of the topics covered. By the end of the five days, participants will have acquired a solid foundation in creative writing, enabling them to continue their writing journey with confidence.
