Homework
1 hour per week. Students will submit sentences, paragraphs, and final drafts of their typed essay within one week after class ends. All submissions sent in by the due date will receive feedback. Parents should also ensure that homework is sent or posted from the learner's profile. It is important for me to keep up with learner's assignments. Parents Please Note: I will keep homework to a minimum, but students that take this course need opportunities outside of class to apply what they have learned to their writing. I also feel it is important for their work to be reviewed and given feedback, so that they begin taking accountability for their own learning.
Assessment
The learner is assessed through written feedback of each assignment submitted on time.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Intermediate - Advanced Level
Every learner has the ability to improve and strengthen their writing. From ones that need a little extra help to learners that possess excellent writing skills, there is always room to create and achieve new learning goals. In this course, students will learn and/or review the conventions and standards of English writing. The goal of this course is for students to be able to construct well-written sentences, paragraphs, and essays. I've helped over a thousand learners become writers as a result of participating in this program. The reviews speak for themselves.

Many teachers expect students need to complete work on their own; however, in my class each student begins the writing process in class. I believe in explicitly directing learners through models and modeling and giving time in class for guided and independent writing activities. This gives students the opportunity to practice in class so I may address any questions or concerns before finishing up work independently. Learners may type or handwrite in this course. I do encourage all learners to type the final essay draft, but I will still accept neatly handwritten assignments.

A typical class will follow this structure:

1. Warm Up -3 minutes
2. Lesson Introduction - 2 minutes
3. Direct Instruction with Active Class Participation - 10 minutes
4. Guided Practice - 10 minutes
5. Independent Writing Practice - 15 minutes
6. Review/Exit Activity - 5 minutes

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

Understand Sentence Structure: Recognize and construct the basic components of a sentence.

Identify Sentence Types: Differentiate between simple, compound, and complex sentences.

Utilize Effective Punctuation: Apply punctuation rules to enhance clarity and meaning.

Vary Sentence Style: Use a variety of sentence structures to improve the flow and engagement of your writing.

Recognize Common Errors: Identify and correct common sentence errors such as fragments, run-ons, and improper comma usage.

Enhance Clarity and Style: Use precise language and stylistic techniques to convey ideas effectively.

Homework is optional.
I will assign homework after each class. Students that choose to complete the assignments are to turn them in the day before class. Students receive homework feedback by the day of our next class. Please ensure your learner adheres to the due date. Late work will not receive feedback. If there are extenuating circumstances, please reach out to me for an extension. As a writing teacher, I spend a lot of hours outside of the classroom reading, reviewing, editing, and giving feedback. Please understand that the late work policy is in place to respect my time and commitment to all of my students to give timely feedback.

I look forward to having your learner in my class!

*Please note that if your learner cannot attend the live class option, I have a FLEX version of this course that independent learners enjoy.* Once you enroll, you may begin at anytime!

Once your learner completes this course, the next step is to take I Can Write Essays for additional essay writing practice. It's best for learners to take both parts to solidify writing skills and gain confidence with the essay writing process.

If you feel your learner is not quite ready for this writing program, please enroll them in my Self- Paced beginner courses. The first is the Constructing Good Sentences course. From there, learns can take Constructing Good Paragraphs and Constructing a Good Essay. All assignments receive feedback as with the LIVE courses.
