Homework
1 hour per week. Students will submit sentences, paragraphs, and final drafts of their typed essay within one week after class ends. All submissions will receive feedback. Parents Please Note: I will keep homework to a minimum, but students that take this course need opportunities outside of class to apply what they have learned to their writing. I also feel it is important for their work to be reviewed and given feedback, so that they begin taking accountability for their own learning.
Assessment
The learner is assessed through written feedback of each assignment submitted.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 7
Beginner - Advanced Level
Every student has the ability to improve and strengthen their writing. From students that need a little extra help to students that possess excellent writing skills, there is always room to create and achieve new learning goals. In this six week course, students will learn and/or review the conventions and standards of English writing. The goal of this course is for students to be able to construct well-written sentences, paragraphs, and essays. This is a FLEX version for students that cannot attend the live sessions. Each week, students will view an interactive lesson recording that is to be played and paused during viewing for lesson completion. Students will post a weekly writing assignment into the peer feedback section for peer collaboration. Students will also submit their revised, edited, and published writing weekly to the teacher to be put in a writing portfolio to be sent to parents at the completion of the course.

✍️Week 1: In this class, students will practice: (1) Identifying simple and compound sentences (2) Identifying varied sentence structure in a reading

✍️Week 2: In this class, students will practice identifying figurative language in writing and creating sentences of varied structure.

✍️Weeks 3-4: In this class, students will examine model paragraphs. Students will be introduced to topic sentences, supporting details that directly relate to the topic sentence, and concluding paragraph sentences. Student will compose both expository and opinion paragraphs in these classes.

✍️Weeks 5 and 6: In these classes, students will examine a model essay. Students will be introduced to the organizational structure of an essay, as well as review topic sentences, supporting details that directly relate to the topic sentence, and smooth transition words and phrases. At the end of class, students will draft a multi-paragraph essay. After class, students will have one week to submit their final drafts in .doc, .pdf format or as a shared document in GoogleDocs. The teacher will provide written feedback for all students. Students will also have an opportunity to use the feedback to improve their essay and re-submit. I feel it is important for students to have opportunities to apply the skills learned and gain information on how well they have used the newly acquired information. Learners MUST directly message me their final essays because once the course date ends, I won't have access to the classroom.

**I do have a flexible age range. In order to accommodate, I typically have my 8-9 year-old students compose a three-paragraph essay and 10 + year-old students compose a five paragraph essay.**

A typical class will follow this structure:

1. Warm Up -3 minutes
2. Lesson Introduction - 2 minutes
3. Direct Instruction with Active Class Participation - 10 minutes
4. Guided Practice - 10 minutes
5. Independent Writing Practice - 15 minutes
6. Review/Exit Activity - 5 minutes

I look forward to having your learner in my class! Remember, this is a self-paced course. Students can begin on ANY date.
