Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Intermediate - Advanced Level
Learning how to write essays requires a lot of effort, consistent practice and revision. The purpose of this writing program is to help learners get comfortable with writing different types of essays that will be expected of them in their academics.

Each essay will follow the standard five-paragraph format. Learners will learn about/review argumentative and expository essays, and they will have an opportunity to submit a final copy of each essay for detailed feedback on how to improve their writing skills. I prefer typed final copies, but I accept legible handwritten essays as well.

I encourage students to use all the steps of the writing process: this includes brainstorming, the use of graphic organizers, revision and editing. As learners become more comfortable with the writing process, it becomes easier and they gain more refined writing skills. I encourage learners to share their topics, details and writing samples aloud on a voluntary basis. This helps create a warm environment of engaged learners. While class time is given to begin writing, there will be time required outside of class to work on essays.

My teaching philosophy is every learner has the ability to improve and strengthen writing skills. From ones that need a little extra help to learners that possess excellent writing skills, there is always room to create and achieve new learning goals.

A typical class will follow this structure:

1. Warm Up -3 minutes
2. Lesson Introduction - 2 minutes
3. Direct Instruction with Active Class Participation - 15 minutes
4. Independent Writing Practice - 20 minutes
5. Wrap up/Homework Review/Final Questions - 5 minutes

I look forward to having your learner(s) in my classroom!
