Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
In this introductory class, students will engage in using phrases to improve and elevate their writing. In other words, they will use what I call 'starter words’ that assist with transition throughout the written text. We will use a mnemonic device in the form of a song to assist students in remembering ‘starter words’ and learn why these are important. We will also look at how they can elevate the student’s writing beyond their current grade level. Then, students will write sentences of their own for practice.

This will assist students in improving their writing fluency; granting them a better overall composition and the ability to move through a paper smoothly. Students will move toward writing above grade level when using 'starter words'. Students should remember, these are different than sequencing words such as: first, then, next, finally. Furthermore, this will help students who take standardized tests perform better.

My goal is to create a meaningful class where students grow in experience and confidence. I hope that students feel comfortable asking questions, encouraging, and challenging one another to create better writing.

Writing can seem overwhelming. By breaking down the writing process, using some simple tools and outlines, students will find success!

Students will have opportunity to ask questions and engage with other students.

This class will use a combination of lecture, powerpoint/google slides, handouts, interaction, and class participation for those who are comfortable with it, to assist students with learning.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to use subordinating conjunctions to start sentence--what I sometimes refer to as "starter words".
