In this ongoing class we will use personal journals to facilitate the free flow of ideas. Students will be encouraged to be free in all ways with their writing. This type of positive writing experience carries over to all forms of writing, creating overall improvement, confidence and enjoyment. There are so many incredible benefits that come along with the simple act of putting pen to paper in a personal journal. We add to this by utilizing the free writing strategy - offering a fun or interesting prompt and encouraging students to "just write" without stopping. This exercise helps them to overcome so many of the fears surrounding the writing process including: 1. Beginning - Fear of the Blank Page! 2.. What do I write about? 3. How do I get my ideas from my head on to the paper. We will spend the first part of class doing an engaging writing warm-up game. This encourages class interaction and starts the flow of creative ideas! After this warm-up students will be given a specific prompt - a new prompt provided each class meeting. Students will be instructed on the specifics of free writing and then given time to write freely - getting ideas flowing and onto the paper - for a specific amount of time. An ongoing class is the perfect format to encourage the participation and familiarity necessary to make this class truly great! Meeting three times a week, for just a half an hour, is all the time necessary to CREATE A NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH WRITING and enhance students confidence in his/her ability to express through the written word. Additional Benefits: Writing in a free and unstructured style in a journal or notebook encourages creativity and a love for writing and improves overall writing skills and writing confidence! When you write in this way you move beyond your limiting, busy mind and allow ideas to appear and flow easily. Journal writing is also proven to increase emotional intelligence, improve confidence, and assist in healing from difficult experiences.
Learning Goals
Students will get comfortable with writing freely for expression and creativity - a skill that benefits and feeds all other forms of writing that they do. Students will create a new relationship to writing - through the enjoyment and confidence building exercises in this class. Students will learn how to get ideas onto the page without the dreaded writers block. Students will also learn a lot about themselves as they delve into the prompts provided each class.
