This ongoing class is designed to support all writers including reluctant writers and students with dysgraphia and other writing challenges by giving them opportunities to engage in purposeful and fun writing with the support of graphic organizers and templates. When kids have dysgraphia and other learning challenges it can be difficult to get started on a writing project. Reluctant writers need extra support such as graphic organizers to help them brainstorm and execute their ideas. Reluctant writers also do better when they have the opportunity to choose what to write about. Reluctant Writers are more motivated to write when they see writing as a way to share meaningful information rather than just an academic exercise. Each session will introduce a writing project based on a genre of writing. The teacher will share a model of the project in the form of a blog post, graphic novel, guidebook page, etc. In class students will: 1) Learn about different genres of fiction and non-fiction writing through teacher modeling and examples written by everyone from famous poets to former students. 2) Choose a topic to write about inspired by the prompt of the week or their own writing interests. Students will do a brainstorming activity with a graphic organizer to record their ideas and give them some words and ideas to work from as they develop their final product. 4) The teacher will be on standby to provide spelling support and brainstorm ideas either verbally or in chat. 5) Students can use a template or design their own writing format to create a final writing product either inspired by the teacher's mini lesson or their own interests. Both writing and drawing will be encouraged. 6) Students can share their writing and illustrations in the class if they wish. After class students can: 1) Polish their work into a "finished product" 2) Share it in our Outschool classroom, indicating whether the writing is for class eyes only or whether the student would like to post on the "Write What You Like" blog. 3) Share it with the world using their first name or a pen name on the "Write What You Like" blog. 4) Posting their work, gives students motivation to produce a completed product and gives their writing a purpose.
