Class Experience

Beginner - Intermediate Level
Join our online adventure, Word Quest: Suffixes, Syllables, and Secret Agents! In this class, students will become secret agents on a mission to stop an evil scientist, using their reading and spelling skills to crack codes and solve puzzles along the way.

Through engaging, hands-on activities, students will learn to identify suffixes and break words into syllables, mastering two-syllable words in the process. Each lesson is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, a proven, evidence-based method that is systematic, explicit, and multisensory. These techniques are designed to strengthen the skills of all learners, especially those with dyslexia.

Your child will have fun while developing essential reading and spelling skills, making this adventure both educational and exciting! Perfect for students who love challenges and enjoy learning in a playful, interactive way.

Learning Goals
Students will learn how to use their knowledge of suffixes and syllables to break down two-syllable words for reading and spelling.
Students will learn about parts of speech (nouns, verbs) and the role of inflectional suffixes.

Lesson 1:
Suffixes -es, -s
 𐩑Learn how to correctly choose between the suffixes -s and -es based on the final consonant of the base word.
𐩑Discuss and identify the uses of the inflectional suffixes -s and -es to create plurals or to change the tense of a verb.

Lesson 2:
Suffixes -ed, -ing
 𐩑Learn the inflectional suffixes -ed and -ing, and how they change the tense of a verb.
𐩑Identify the three sounds of the -ed suffix: /d/, /t/, and /id/.
𐩑Practice isolating the suffix in a word for decoding and encoding.
𐩑Analyze and practice irregularly spelled high frequency words in isolation and in sentences.

Open and Closed Syllable Introduction
 𐩑Review the concept of syllables and practice breaking words into syllables.
𐩑Introduce open syllables with a long vowel and closed syllables with a short vowel.

 𐩑Identify closed and open syllable words in sentences and a decodable passage.
𐩑Practice writing sentences using words with open and closed syllables.

Other Details

Learning Needs
This course is designed for older students who wish to strengthen foundational reading and spelling skills through systematic, explicit, multisensory methods. These may include students with dyslexia or other language based disabilities.
Pre-Requisites
Students should be able to read and spell single syllable words with consonant blends, digraphs and short vowels such as squid, mist, crunch and shock with good accuracy.
Supply List
Students will need a notebook and fine tipped marker handy for our class. (a fine tipped Crayola or Flair marker works great)  Please no pencils, they are too difficult to read on camera.
