Class Experience

This book club is for students who LOVE reading and discovering awesome books and authors! Each month, students will be assigned a Newbery award winning or honor novel, or another noteworthy book, from a great author to read outside of class time. These books will be approximately 200-300 pages long and the time spend reading will vary for each reader. We will meet two times to discuss the book. During our class time we will discuss the book in a supportive environment. We will discuss topics such as theme, character traits, understanding genre, and making connections. Students in the class will have the opportunity to recommend and vote on our upcoming reads.

Class starting:
September 25- Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix
October 23- The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill
December 11- Holes by Louis Sachar
Learning Goals

Students will discuss character traits, themes, and making connections

Parental Guidance
I believe students should be free to read what is enjoyable to them, however it is important that for the purposes of this class we keep the book discussions to age appropriate literature. Middle grade fiction generally contains: -No profanity or graphic violence -Romance that is limited to crushes and first kisses -Protagonists that are under 13 -Themes such as coming of age, dealing with bullies, forming lasting friendships Parents are advised to play an active role in your child's reading life and be aware of their book choices. Common Sense Media is a great source to get information about books.
Supply List
Students will need to acquire their own copies of the assigned books.
