Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
This book club is for students who need an outlet to talk about great books! Each week, students will have the chance to share what they've been reading been other learners. Students can share their likes and dislikes, make connections, and talk about characters. The book club will be laid back with students leading the conversation. The teacher will guide the learners to make sure every student has a chance to speak and also asking questions to keep the conversation going. The teacher will create and share a list of books that are recommended by other learners to share each week. Also, students will be challenged to read other formats and genres that they might not normally choose on their own. Each week, the teacher will provide optional writing challenges that students can do for fun to go with their reading selections.

Each week will follow the same format:
5-10 minutes- Students share what they've been reading this week
10 minutes- Making connections to other books, characters, our lives

Parental Guidance
I believe students should be free to read what is enjoyable to them, however it is important that for the purposes of this class we keep the book discussions to middle grade or children's literature. Middle grade literature is written for ages 8-12. In this class, we will avoid discussing Young Adult Literature that is written for ages 12-18. Middle grade fiction generally contains: -No profanity or graphic violence -Romance that is limited to crushes and first kisses -Protagonists that are under 13 -Themes such as coming of age, dealing with bullies, forming lasting friendships Parents are advised to play an active role in your child's reading life and be aware of their book choices. Common Sense Media is a great source to get information about books. Flipgrid will be used as an optional resource to respond to the books each week. Flipgrid is a kid friendly platform for students to record video responses. This class will have it's own private flipgrid channel that can only be viewed by other learners in the class. All posts will be moderated by the teacher.
