US Grade 1 - 3
Beginner Level
We will meet once to learn and practice three vowel digraphs--"ai," "ea," and "oa." The words, pictures, game, and story will be Viking-themed. It will be useful for students who are starting to read at first grade level, whether they are learning vowel digraphs for the first time or are struggling readers who can use the extra practice. It will be taught by a certified k-8 teacher. Our class format will consist of: First 10 minutes: Phonemic Awareness Blending - Teacher says sounds and models blending them, teacher/students do it together Reading Drill - Teacher points to words, and students take turns reading them Writing Drill - Teacher read words aloud, and students write the words they hear Middle 10 minutes: Game Teacher puts cut-outs of three Viking shields on the board, each with a different vowel digraph. Teacher holds up cut-outs of Viking axes with words written on them. Students take turns reading the words aloud and matching each axe to the corresponding shield. Last 10 minutes: Reading Students will practice reading the vowel digraphs they have learned in the context of a short, Viking-themed story. Students should have their cameras turned on for the duration of the class so that I can check they are engaging and responding appropriately.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to identify and decode words containing the two vowels "ai" that work together to create a single sound, allowing students to read and spell words with these combinations accurately, such as in "rain."
Students will be able to identify and decode words containing the two vowels "ea" that work together to create a single sound, allowing students to read and spell words with these combinations accurately, such as in "spear."
