Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 11
U.S. History is long, complex, and filled with diverse stories. This course is the first chapter in a 12-part series that explores it all. In Part 1, we’ll focus on the earliest periods of North American history, examining the rich variety of Indigenous cultures that thrived across the continent long before European arrival. We’ll also explore the motivations, routes, and settlements of various European nations that explored and colonized the Americas.

Students will begin to build a strong chronological understanding of early U.S. history while developing key historical thinking skills.

📌 Note: While this course is part of a larger series, it is not required to take all 12 parts or to follow them in sequence. Each course stands alone and can be taken individually.

🎓 Course Format
This class is delivered in an asynchronous format, with no live class meetings, making it flexible for self-paced learners. Students will have 1 full year from their enrollment date to complete the course content.

Instruction is provided through:

📽️ Recorded video lectures

📚 Supplemental readings, worksheets, and optional assignments

🎨 Hands-on activities such as recipes, dioramas, creative projects, and curated film clips

Communication and support from the instructor are available during the official 20-week class period. Homework is optional, and if submitted, will receive feedback within 24 hours (excluding Sundays).

Learning Goals

Identify and describe the major Indigenous cultures and regions of North America prior to European contact.

Parental Guidance
This class will utilize Youtube videos for sharing of lecture videos, as well as supplemental lessons. All Youtube videos are embedded into the Outschool platform. This class will cover early American history, which includes topics of violence, domination, racism, slavery, and discrimination. All topics will be discussed at an age appropriate level. (Please check the age group of the class before registering.) Some of the sources used for this course use derogatory and racist language towards Native Americans, African Americans, and others. My goal for this course is to be inclusive and to highlight how history is often more commonly written from the perspective of the perceived winner and to create an inclusive class that highlights multiple perspectives of history.
