What's included
5 live meetings
2 hrs 30 mins in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. Practice the chord fingering and strumming techniques discussed in class, as well as practice playing songs that we learn during our lessons (the teacher will share digital copies of the music).Assessment
The student will be informally assessed by the teacher and given specific pointers on what to practice more or what to modify in their technique.Class Experience
In this first part of the multi-day course, we will begin by learning correct terms (frets, chords, strumming, tuning, etc), identifying the different parts of our instruments, and tuning our instruments. Then we will move on to learning a few basic chords, building in difficulty and intensity as we progress our learning during the entire course. Students will be taught how to strum in different rhythms to match each song tempo (example: down, down, up, down, up...). They will also be playing simple songs from the very first lesson- building in skill level as they acquire more knowledge and chord change fluidity. It is my goal to make the learning process fun, and I encourage students to have fun playing their ukulele and singing during their weekly lessons. Music is supposed to be enjoyable, and learning is easier when students are having a blast. It is my hope that by creating this private lesson, the more hesitant, shy, or gradual learners will feel more at ease and get the specialized, undivided attention that they need. This course can be taken by siblings or close friends (commonly booked by 2 students together), or it can be taken by a single student; once the single student signs up for the class, I will immediately contact the parent to ensure that there are no friends/siblings attending, and then mark that class section as "private" to ensure that it stays 1-on-1. Please be advised that I do NOT have any certifications or qualifications for teaching this class as a special education course for students with learning disabilities. Therefore I suggest that if your student has been diagnosed with a learning disability, that you look for and attain the services of a qualified music teacher in order to provide your student with the best educational opportunity. Thank you for understanding. I look forward to singing and sharing some tunes with you soon! **NOTE: Please ensure that the student comes to each class (except perhaps the first lesson) with their instrument tuned. It is imperative that the student has a freshly tuned instrument before practicing or attending a lesson in order to ensure maximum instructional effectiveness and new skill retention.** Here's the schedule of events: Week 1: Parts of the Ukulele Instrument, How to Read Chord Tabs, Intro to the 4 Basic Chords (C,G,Am,F), First Songs Week 2: Beginner Music with Nature Theme, Easy Strumming Techniques, New Chords (G7, D) Week 3: New Music with a Disney Theme, Intro to Strumming Rhythms, New Chords (Em, D7, E7, Dm) Week 4: Improve Strumming Skills with Pop Music Theme [PG or G rated], New Chords (Am7, Bb) Week 5: Showstopper Challenge to Showcase Cumulative Learning and Skill Retention
Learning Goals
The student will learn and improve upon their musical ability with playing the ukulele and memorizing its chord fingerings. Singing is heavily encouraged, although it is not necessary a part of the curriculum (songs/melodies will be taught and singing or humming the tune is helpful to beginner students).
Other Details
Supply List
-Ukulele (Note: The teacher uses a "Soprano" and/or "Concert" ukulele in class, but any real ukulele instrument will be acceptable. However, please note that based on size differences, the tone/pitch of the student instrument may be slightly different than that of the teacher in the event their their instrument is bigger/smaller than the teachers.) -Ukulele Tuner (app version or small digital tuning device are recommended)
1 file available upon enrollment
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
A ukulele tuner app is highly beneficial (and free). I use one simply called "ukelele tuner" from the Apple store; it has a mint green background and over-sized white letters that spell "uku-lele".
The student may also want to watch YouTube tutorial videos as review or extra practice on the topics and techniques that we learn in class.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have experience teaching students ranging from grade school ages into adulthood, tutoring 1-on-1, and teaching large groups. I was a language and art/music teacher in Europe for about a year, while traveling around Europe and the UK, where students came to learn English and study various topics through theatre and play activities. In the past, I've also taught kindergarten through 5th grade students in a US public school, and I taught ESL online for nearly 3 years as a certified teacher.
I graduated in 2017 from Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts. I am currently studying front-end web design while working as a private tutor and website creator. In my free time, I enjoy playing music on my ukulele, travel photography, and baking. I have a passion for all forms of art and the creative process that comes with it.
Whatever my current situation may be, I feel motivated to empower young students to realize their academic and creative potential through meaningful play and personal mentorship. I am looking forward to creating fun and productive courses through Outschool and I look forward to seeing you in my classroom soon!
