The True History of Elizabeth Bathory: The Blood Countess

She's been called The Blood Countess and the first female serial killer, but what is the truth? This feminist take on European history will question the horror story as learners use evidence to draw their own conclusions.

Class Experience

Elizabeth Bathory is known as The Blood Countess of Transylvania. She's found over and over again on Halloween history and scary true story lists. But are the tales true? Did she really kill young women and bathe in their blood? Is she truly Bram Stoker's inspiration for the tale of Dracula? We'll never know for sure, but we can make guesses based on the historical evidence.

In this course, learners will participate in an interactive lesson through Nearpod. We'll explore Elizabeth's background, the accusations made against her, and the holes in her accuser's stories. This will consist of some lecture, with discussion questions and interactive slides throughout. Then, learners will practice some argument writing as we work to write a claim either accusing or defending Bathory of her crimes.
