Class Experience

In this 40-minute lesson, students will receive an introduction to solfege, the world-wide standard for learning musical aural skills, pitch, and sight-singing. They will be introduced to the musical staff, solfege syllables (Do Re Mis), and solfege hand symbols. By the end of the lesson, students will practice reading popular song tunes using this system. This lesson is designed for beginning music students, or music students with little-to-no experience in sight singing.

Students will participate in an interactive learning environment based on positive encouragement and practice. Be prepared to sing! Mistakes are welcome, as long as we have the courage to try.

All students will receive a worksheet with a summary of the lesson concepts and practice examples.

Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Emily Heumann and I am a professional singer and voice teacher. As a singer, I’ve had the opportunity to travel all over the world for performances in opera, musical theatre, concert, recital, oratorio, and cabaret genres. Singing is truly my passion. I received my Master of Music degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from The University of Houston in Texas in 2018, and my Bachelor’s degree in Music from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. I have studied under some of the greatest artists in the world, and for the last 8 years I have been honored to teach and mentor hundreds of my own students. I have experience teaching students both online and in person (in the voice studio). I am currently a professor of voice at the college in my town and I am a proud member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. I have experience teaching students ranging from children to senior citizens, and beginning singers to advanced and experienced singers. My students have received admittance into top collegiate voice programs, they have been cast in professional productions, and they have won competitive scholarships and awards. I am passionate about teaching healthy and sustainable singing technique for a lifetime of singing. It’s my belief that our singing voices are incredibly valuable and unique, and it’s my privilege to train singers to use their individual voices to communicate and express themselves.
