Description

Class Experience

Students will read and discover new fantasy novels and engage in thoughtful discussion about character, plot, fantasy genre devices, and other thematic elements.
I am a lifelong fan of fantasy books and would love to inspire other students to read frequently. I have an Honors degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and have 8 years of teaching and tutoring experience.
Each book varies in length and can be up to 400-500 pages. Our class will focus on books that students have completed reading so students should be prepared to read one book a week for this course.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Books selected may contain some mature themes and sensitive material, but there will be no egregious violence, profanity, or sexuality in the books covered in this course. If your child has read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire or the Hunger Games, then these books will be analogous in content.
During the previous week's class, I will review trigger warnings for the upcoming book and place them in context of larger works. We will not mention any outside material in class.

Parents may use their discretion about reading material mentioned in the course description.
All books can be found at most school and public libraries, as well as at local bookstores.

Spring 2021 schedule is as follows
April 7 - Heartless by Marissa Meyer
April 14 - Uprooted by Naomi Novik
April 21 - The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
April 28 - Peter and the Star Catchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson
May 5 and 12 - Lore by Alexandra Bracken
May 19 - To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
May 26 - The Seventh Raven by David Elliott
