Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Intermediate Level
Syllables
Why teach about syllables? Dividing words into parts, or "chunks" helps speed the process of decoding. Knowing the rules for syllable division can students read words more accurately and fluently. Understanding syllables can also help students learn to spell words correctly.

When readers know the syllable division rules, it A) helps them successfully decode multisyllabic words and B) provides them with clues about the vowel sounds in multisyllabic words! Knowing how to divide words into syllables gives your kids POWER to attack those longer words!

Each week we will learn a new syllable pattern, while reviewing specific spelling patterns which make up syllable parts.

Students should have basic knowledge of letter sounds, such as short and long vowels, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels. However, as we move through the class, certain sounds and patterns will be reviewed.

V = Vowel
C = Consonant

Class 1:  Closed Syllable Pattern VC/CV &
Closed Syllable Pattern (with consonant blends & digraphs)  VC/CV (including.....VC/CCV & VC/CCCV )

Class 2:   V-C-E “Magic E” VC/CV

Class 3: R-Controlled Vowels VC/CV , first syllable and second syllable

Class 4: Vowel Teams Compound Words

Class 5: Open Syllables V/CV, Closed Syllables VC/V

Class 6:   CLE Syllables /CLE

Class 7:  V/V

Students will be given syllable rules and instructions, in writing, regarding each syllable pattern. Students will be given words for labeling/dividing, reading, and spelling practice. All materials will be posted in the classroom. Students will be able to post or email work for me to provide feedback.

Each week students will also be asked to write a journal entry or paragraph about something of interest to the student. It is up to the student, as long as it is respectful, no politics, or any other controversial issues, please. Post writing in the classroom.

Students must include:
• 3 words which follow that week’s pattern.

•Remember to include appropriate punctuation and capitalization.
