In this one-time class students will take turns playing a Mario memory reading game which will provide an introduction into some basic, three letter, single syllable CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. Students will be helped if they need assistance with letter sounds and/or sounding out the word. This class offers a way to teach the beginning concepts of reading and sounding out words in a fun, relaxed kind of way. While individually taking turns to identify pairs, students will also have the opportunity to work together and help each other learn. Each student will have multiple turns during the game and multiple games may be played as time permits. This class is great for students who love Mario and all of his friends (and a couple enemies too!) My class setting is a relaxed, fun, open space for students to be able to discuss and express their thoughts about what we are learning. I encourage student interaction with not only myself but with their fellow classmates. Everyone is expected to be respectful and listen to one another but also feel like they have the ability to share their own thoughts and opinions. I believe learning should be fun and try to provide a space for that to happen.
Learning Goals
Students will learn/practice/review how to correctly read and sound out CVC words while also flexing their memory muscles. They will learn how to encourage each other and how to participate in team based problem solving. They will also be able to share to the group about their favorite characters and/or games enhancing their group speaking skills.Other Details

Hi! I love to teach classes that are fun and promote discussion and creativity. In all of my classes I mix critical thinking with out of the box thinking so that the kids learn something brand new! I find the best way to do this is by using books, video games, trivia and other interactive components to keep them engaged and wanting to learn.
My passion for critical thought stems from my degree in Philosophy. The integration of pop culture in my classes is rooted in a lifetime of toy collecting, video game playing, and during my time as a staff writer for an online comic book review site. Over the past five years I have created community-based, pop-up craft classes for parents and children that integrate culture and thought, and I am excited about the opportunity to share these types of activities with my students!
Outside of teaching I enjoy spending time with my husband, son, two cats and puppy! I love online gaming and spending a lot of time crafting.Reviews
