Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this six week self-paced course, learners will view a weekly video lesson (content described below). Each lesson will include a related activity (except the last week, which is review) to help reinforce the vocabulary and content taught that week. Additionally, on week 1 there is a parent note to help parents reinforce the skills taught through the entire course.

Background information:
Social emotional learning key concepts are often accepted to be part of the following framework:
Self-Awareness
Self-Regulation (Management)
Social Awareness
Relationship Skills
Responsible Decision Making

This class will dive deep into Self-Awareness, which is how we can begin to solve any problem, and touch on Self-Regulation, including body work strategies (such as breath work, muscle and body scans, exercise, etc...) and cognitive strategies (such as reflective practices, I statements, and Noticing and Wondering). Each week learners will gain new vocabulary to help them use their communication skills to describe their internal experiences. This is Part 1 of a 4 part series that will eventually cover all five of the key social emotional concepts listed above.

Students will be able to engage with the teacher and other learners through the classroom. They will be encouraged to share photos/files of the activities they complete, comment on others' work, and ask questions.

There will be one optional live meeting toward the end of the class if learners want to meet each other and the teacher and celebrate all their new knowledge and skills! :)
Learning Goals
Students will be able to:

1. Use a wide range of vocabulary to accurately describe the physical signs (signals) of emotions-ex. butterflies in the stomach, tense muscles, red/hot skin, sweaty palms

2. Use a wide range of vocabulary to accurately describe many emotions experienced by someone their age.

3. Describe the idea that emotions are not positive or negative but rather have particular jobs to do, which informs our brains.

4. Assess the intensity of an emotion and apply an appropriate strategy for managing/tolerating it.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching neurodiverse students for more than 28 years and have a PhD. in Infant and Early Childhood Development. My graduate course of study focused on the social emotional lives of students, assessing milestones and the developmental progression of knowledge and skills from infancy through adulthood. I teach professional development for my school district and surrounding school districts on the topics of regulation, attention, engagement, assertive communication skills, problem-solving/conflict resolution, and relationships as they relate to school aged children. I also teach crisis intervention for adults.

Additionally, I have been teaching social emotional skill groups for more than 20 years. I was the lead writer for my school district's social emotional curriculum for our neurodiversity program. I think social emotional understanding is the CORE of all learning throughout our lifetimes. I am passionate about the subject and love sharing this information with students of all ages. Students are empowered when they better understand themselves, and this knowledge and skill set will apply to all aspects of their lives. I would love the opportunity to share my passion for this subject with your learner.
