In this four part class students will create a sun, moon, and stars themed decorative mobile while continuing to improve their hand sewing skills. Students will practice following provided patterns to create plush decorations out of felt and ribbon. We will cover using pins to maintain fabric placement while sewing, improving stitch quality so that stitches are small and even, and how to stuff and sew the opening shut. The class will be taught using live demonstrations followed by time for students to sew under instructor supervision. Extra time will be needed outside of class to complete steps and be ready for the next class. Class 1: We will create a plush moon and practice sewing around sharp corners and stuffing unusual shapes. Class 2: We will create a plush sun, a more challenging piece to sew due to the placement of the rays. Class 3: We will start on the starry sky and learn about appliqué to sew on the stars. Class 4: We will put finishing touches on our celestial plushies and finish our mobile. This is an intermediate level hand sewing class. Students should already be adept at independently threading a needle, knotting their thread, and making a basic straight stitch. These skills will not be taught in this class.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their sewing skills by sewing curved and irregular shapes. Focus will be put on making small, even stitches to increase stitch strength and allow for the items to be stuffed. We will also learn about using pins effectively and safely to provide stability while sewing. Finally, we will learn about the use of appliqué as a decorative method of sewing.
