Description

Class Experience

Students will improve their sewing skills by sewing curved and irregular shapes. Focus will be put on making small, even stitches to increase stitch strength and allow for the items to be stuffed. We will also learn about using pins effectively and safely to provide stability while sewing. Finally, we will learn about the use of appliqué as a decorative method of sewing.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts with a focus on costuming and performance and a Master of Library and Information Science. I have over 30 years of experience in sewing and embroidery and have taught hand sewing and machine sewing in both one on one and group settings.
Projects begun during each session will need to be finished between classes in order to complete the mobile during the final class. The amount of time this requires outside of class will depend on how quickly the student sews. Classes will be scheduled with several days between sessions in order to allow for plenty of sewing time.

The printed handouts - there is a separate handout for each of the first three classes Felt pieces - you are welcome to make it in any colors you wish, however to make the mobile as shown in the class photo you will need the following colors: -One 9"x12" piece of yellow felt -One 9"x12" piece of navy blue or purple felt -One 9"x12" piece of gray felt -An orange felt scrap at least 6"x6" -A red felt scrap at least 6"x6" Pins and a pin cushion - ball head pins are preferred as they are easier to grasp Scissors capable of cutting felt Needle - should be made of metal Needle threader - this is optional but may help students thread their needle more easily. These are frequently found around the house in travel sewing kits and look like a metal coin with a wire loop sticking out of one end. A spool of thread in a coordinating or contrasting color Approximately 6 feet of either 3/8" or 5/8" wide ribbon - this can be a single color or multiple colors A 5" diameter metal ring - this can be found inexpensively at craft stores. Alternatively, a wooden dowel could also be used for a flat mobile. Polyester fiberfill stuffing A stuffing tool such as a chopstick or an un-sharpened pencil
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Needles, pins, and scissors will all be used during this class. As these are sharp objects, an adult should remain nearby to supervise.
